At the Feb. 16 meeting of the CV Town Council, member Frank Beyt introduced a new tutoring program that the town council, in conjunction with Crescenta Valley High School, is sponsoring. The program will initially work with students at La Crescenta Elementary School and Beyt urged council audience members to consider helping out.

“Think of what you can really contribute to these children,” he said, explaining that the main criteria to helping is caring about children and being dependable.

LC Elementary principal Kim Bishop also spoke of the program and how important it was for the school’s 500-plus student body.

“Whatever time you can donate – even an hour a week – would be great,” Bishop said. “We will make the most of that hour.”

Bishop would direct the efforts of the volunteers, giving a tour of the school and outlining expectations. Also taking the podium at the meeting was CV Sheriff’s Capt. Dave Silversparre who outlined calls that the station responded to in January. Two-hundred and fifty-six calls for services were made during the month, Silversparre reported. He added that cellphones were still attractive targets for thieves. He went on to say that it was important for those who utilize social media to not make it known when they are out of town, alerting possible burglars of an empty home.

“Protect yourself,” Silversparre advised.

He reminded the audience that March is safety month and deputies are available – as they are year round – to speak on any safety topic at civic groups and public meetings.

Jordan Severs of So. Cal Recycling took the microphone to explain the company’s “Keep It Local” program by not just collecting goods at bins around town, but donating a portion of the proceeds from those donations to local non-profit organizations. Currently, bins are in the parking lot of St. Luke’s of the Mountains Episcopal Church at Rosemont and Foothill and at Ocean View Car Wash on Foothill Boulevard. Most items except for electronic waste can be dropped off at the bins. Special e-waste collection events will be scheduled.

Mike Baldwin of the American Legion reminded the audience that Rosemont Middle School is the site of a pancake breakfast on March 10 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Proceeds benefit the Two Strike Memorial planned for the park. The project is estimated to cost $75,000. Pancake breakfast tickets are $5 and available around town including the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce and Crescenta Valley Weekly.
