REPUBLICAN WOMEN HOSTING LUNCHEON TODAY
The community is invited to join the La Crescenta Valley Republican Women Federated for a luncheon on Thursday, March 8 at the La Cañada Country Club from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Special guest is speaker Donna Lowe Dynamic who is running for 41st Assembly District.

FREE TAX PREPARATION
Residents can receive free tax preparation under the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program provided through AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, a tax-exempt charity of AARP.  Membership in AARP is not required.

Free tax preparation can be obtained at La Crescenta County Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd. (corner of La Crescenta Avenue) through Friday, April 13.  The hours are Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Taxpayers will be served on a “first-come-first-served” basis; no advanced reservations are available.  Enter from the upper level parking lot.

 ‘PROGRESSIONS’ EXHIBIT AT FOREST LAWN
Forest Lawn is hosting Syd Mead: Progressions, a captivating exhibit of work by legendary artist Syd Mead through April 15. The exhibit is a retrospective of more than 50 years of Mead’s artwork, ranging from selections from his academic years to his most current works.

The Syd Mead: Progressions exhibit demonstrates the artist’s uncanny ability to take contemporary concepts and translate them into believable and practical visions of the future. This unique talent has earned him the title of “Visual Futurist.” The exhibit includes finished paintings that capture everything from conceptual terrestrial and extraterrestrial vehicles to interplanetary resort destinations.

KieFER FEATURED SPEAKER
American Association of University Women presents Dr. Jill Kiefer speaking on Fine Arts and Art History at their branch meeting on Saturday, March 10 at 9 a.m. at the Oakmont Country Club. Dr. Kiefer teaches Art History at Mount Saint Mary’s College and also teaches Fine Arts and Art History at Pasadena College, Glendale College and the Palos Verdes Art Center.

She completed her own academic work at the University of New Mexico, Saint Johns College and Warnborough College in Canterbury, England. She is currently writing and producing an art history series and a studio workshop series for new media and web venues.

PANHELLENIC SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON PLANNED
The annual Alumnae Panhellenic Scholarship luncheon will be held on March 10 at the Oakmont Country Club.

The Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic provides financial assistance to young women from the area attending college. Each year, scholarship grants are awarded to qualified, college bound, high school senior women from over 10 private and public high schools in the area, and to college sorority women who meet different eligibility requirements.

Everyone is invited to attend the luncheon; sorority membership is not required.  Reservations are required, and the price per person is $55.

The luncheon starts at 11 a.m. with a social hour, followed by lunch starting at noon. The guest speaker is Denise Hamilton, former Los Angeles Times reporter, award winning journalist and author of nine crime novels.

The event will end with the drawing of raffle prize winners and announcement of the silent auction winners.

ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT GROUP
Mountview Retirement Home sponsors a monthly free Alzheimer’s Support Group on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. The next group will be held on Tuesday, March 13 at 7 p.m.

SIERRA CLUB HOSTS WILDLIFE WAYSTATION
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club presents The Wildlife Waystation on Tuesday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.  Please enter on La Crescenta Avenue for the meeting room and parking.

Martine Colette, director and founder of the Wildlife Waystation since 1976, houses, cares for and protects wild and exotic animals that have been injured, abused and abandoned. The Waystation now is caring for over 400 animals.

Representative Jean Cassidy will show her PowerPoint program explaining the work done, the purpose and the future.  All financial support for this facility comes solely from donations.  Cassidy plans to bring a few live-in animal critters.

GENEALOGY SUBJECT OF TALK
Laura Stotler, an experienced genealogy researcher, will speak at the Glendale Public Library on March 14 about the resources that are available for individuals to research their family history. The talk, titled “Uncover Your Past: Glendale’s Genealogy Resources,” will be held at 7 p.m. on March 14 in the Glendale Central Library Auditorium. The event is sponsored by The Glendale Historical Society and the Glendale Public Library.

By day, Stotler is a principal planner with the City of Glendale. After hours, she is an investigator, digging up clues and solving family mysteries. She will share her 12-plus years of experience in genealogical research with examples of what she has uncovered and how others can further their own pursuits. Those with Glendale roots will learn about little-known local resources, in addition to information about regional and national searches. Guests can learn how to begin or continue, at little or no cost, their own projects. Those not conducting research will nevertheless find the stories and information fascinating.

CABI FASHION SHOW AND LUNCHEON
“On the Runway” spring Cabi fashion show and luncheon will be presented by the Pasadena Women’s Connection on Wednesday, March 14 at 11:30 a.m. at the Altadena Country Club in Altadena.  Susan Sinclair, consultant for Cabi, will present fashions designed for women of all ages and types.

Motivational speaker Lona Beardsley, teacher, counselor and joyful mother of eight, will talk on “The Inside Story of Family Relationships.” Local vocalist Kathy Link will provide music for the program. Everyone is invited to attend.

EYE ON JACOB FUNDRAISER PLANNED
A fundraiser is planned for Eye on Jacob at the Santa Anita Race track in the Chandelier room on March 17 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The event is to raise research funds of which 100% is donated to a dedicated doctor and team at the Univ. of Iowa for Usher Syndrome. Participants will enjoy a casino night filled with entertainment, appetizers, drinks and lots of games and silent auction items including trips as prizes to our top game winners.

MOONDAY EAST FEATURES MELISSA STUDDARD  
Moonday East will feature poet Melissa Studdard on March 18 at 2 p.m. at Flintridge Bookstore in La Cañada.  Moonday is produced and hosted by Alice Pero and co-produced by Lois P. Jones. The East Side reading occurs on the third Sunday of every month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a feature and open mic.

Melissa Studdard is the author of the best­selling novel “Six Weeks to Yehidah” and the newly released “My Yehidah,” a companion journal that nurtures emotional intelligence, creativity, and authenticity. Studdard’s poetry, fiction, essays, reviews and articles have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. She currently serves as a reviewer-at-large for “The National Poetry Review,” an editorial advisor for Lapis Lazuli Journal of The Harold Pinter Society of India, and a contributing editor for both “The Criterion” and “Tiferet.”
