Bulldogs, Falcons and Dynamiters gather for Tri-meet

CV track and field athletes rallied in their first Pacific League tri-meet against Glendale and Pasadena on March 22 at Moyse Field. Pasadena was weakened in competition due to the loss of several teammates however the traditional dual meet rival of Falcon versus Dynamiters played out strongly.

The Dynamiters proved to be especially solid in the sprints and middle distance, which resulted in a close scoring afternoon. CV’s final score was a victorious 69-67.

The first race of the day, the 4x100m relay, was won by Glendale (44.02) with Pasadena taking second (44.43) and CV third (45.78).

In the 1600m, Falcon Mike Duncan and Dynamiter Joshua Carlos battled for the lead with Carlos pulling forward at the last to win (4:32.39). Duncan finished second (4:33.13) and Nick Beatty, who was not feeling well, took a needed third (4:34.84).

In the 100m hurdles, Glendale’s Tristan Pacba won first (16:45) followed by teammate Siraj Landery  (17:62) and CV’s Jeffrey Saengsri placing third (18:07). Unfortunately for CV, hurdler Josh Straschewski did not run in the meet.

Pasadena found a win in the 400m with Bulldog Taylor Harris (51:96) followed by Glendale’s Carlos Navarro taking second (52.76) and Pasadena’s Alfred Robinson placing third (53:13). CV’s Alex Damla placed fourth (53:66) and Parker Averill fifth (54:37).

In the 800m, Falcons Matt Williams had an outstanding win (2:01.83) with teammate Duncan taking second (2:02.33) and Bulldog Michael Dondalski capturing third (2:03.71).

Star sprinter Dynamiter Michael Davis was a dual winner in the 100m and 200m.

CV took the first four places in the 3200m. Sophomore Gabe Collison ran one of the best times this year (10:03.90) with teammates Aaron Esparza placing second (10:05.70), and Duncan and Nick Beatty ran together for third and fourth with the same time (10:17.20).

On the field, Glendale’s Mathew DeFrance won first in the shot put (39-02) with CV’s Averill throwing 36-00.

Falcon Tyler Bradshaw won the pole vault (12-00) while teammate Logan Rodgers placed second (9-06). Glendale Coach Bob Bailey said that he mistakenly ran a student who was not cleared by CIF so Glendale lost to both CV and Pasadena.

Although the Falcon girls fell to the Glendale Dynamiters’ strength in a 66-70 loss, CV had some exceptional wins.

Kayleigh Carrillo not only won the 200m (26.27) and 400m (1:00.2), but anchored both the 4×100 relay (51:17) and the 4x400m relay with teammates Noel Wong, Emmy Walker and Claudia Sepulveda.

Emily Beglarian had her best high jump to take the win (5-0).

Dynamite star hurdler Sophia Amodia had a dual win in the 100m hurdles (15.90) and the 300 low hurdles.

Falcon Claudia Sepulveda ran a second in both the 100H (16:58) and the 300LH with teammate Sarah Lapides taking third in the 100 hurdles (18.10).      Glendale’s Leana Setian saw a dual win in the 1600m (5:20.70) and the 3200m (11:45.10). CV’s Cali King (5:29.73) and Brook Moultrie  (5:35.12) took second and third.
