Frazee coming to bookstore

Once Upon A Time Bookstore is hosting Caldecott-Honor winning children’s illustrator Marla Frazee at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14 at the store. Frazee will read from her latest illustrated Beach Lane book, “All the World.”  The book was just named as one of the best children’s book in 2009 by Publisher’s Weekly magazine.

Frazee’s illustrations appear in some of the best-loved children’s books including “Seven Silly Eaters,” “Harriet, You’ll Drive Me Wild!” “Roller Coaster,” “Santa – The No. 1 Toy Expert,” and her Caldecott-Honor winning “A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever.”

Once Upon A Time bookstore is located in Montrose Shopping Park next to Rocky Cola Café and Zeke’s.

Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club holding meeting

The Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club will hold its next meeting from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the home of La Cañada’s own Assemblyperson Anthony Portantino, 4612 La Cañada Blvd. in La Cañada.

The Club will present Richard Platkin who will speak on “The U.S. infrastructure Crisis: Its Causes, Consequences and Possible Solutions.” Mr. Platkin worked for the City of Los Angeles for 25 years as a senior urban planner.

MISSION INDIAN REVOLUTIONS TOPIC OF MEETING

The Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley presents a little known aspect of California’s Mission history, the resistance movement of the Indians that were recruited to the Missions. Professor James Adams of the University of Southern California has studied the history and healing of California Indians for many years.

He will discuss several questions about Indians and the Mission system. How were people recruited to and retained in the Missions? What was it like to live in the Missions? Did the Indians rebel against the Mission system? Did Indians escape from the Mission system? What happened when the Missions were secularized in the 1830s?

Professor Adams will discuss his recent book “Estanislao – Warrior, Man of God” and relate the history of Estanislao, a forgotten hero.

Professor Adams got his PhD in Pharmacology in 1981 from UC San Francisco. He has been on the faculty at USC for 22 years. Cecilia Garcia, a Chumash healer, has been his teacher for 10 years. Together they have written a book and several articles on healing.

The public is invited to the free meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16 at the Center For Spiritual Living (formerly known as the La Crescenta Church of Religious Science), 4845 Dunsmore, on the corner of Dunsmore and Santa Carlotta.

New Works at Brand Library

New artwork by local resident Srboohie Abajian and Renee Azenaro, Matthew Cramer, Don Saban and John Smith are on display at the Brand Library Art Galleries through Dec. 11. Metropolis: Prospects & Observations explores the experience and substance of the modern metropolis through the eyes of five artists working in a variety of media. Brand Library is located at 1601 W. Mountain Street in Glendale.

FSHA TO STAGE Chicago

The award-winning musical “Chicago” will be playing at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in La Cañada for five nights, Nov. 9-14, in the school’s auditorium.

What makes this production especially exciting is that it will be performed in the round, creating a speakeasy ambiance, said director Mark Bommarito.

Shows start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at $14 on line at www.ticketguys.com, or $15 at the door.

Opening night tickets are $20 and include a reception at 6:30 p.m.
