ABILITYFIRST HAVING 5K RUN/WALK
Donors, sponsors and participants are still needed for the annual Santa Anita Derby Day 5K Run/Walk supporting AbilityFirst on April 7. Pre-event activities and registration start at 6 a.m. and the race starts at 8:15 a.m.  Participants must be onsite by 7 a.m. due to street closures.

Last year, AbilityFirst reached its goal of raising $418,000 to support children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. This year, funds raised beyond $350,000 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Forest Lawn Foundation up to a maximum grant of $75,000.

BRAND LIBRARY & ART CENTER PRE-RENOVATION SALE
Brand Library recently closed for a major renovation. On Saturday, April 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a big pre-renovation sale in the Brand Library Art Galleries. Sale items include books, CDs, LPs, wooden shelves and book carts, tables, file cabinets, desks, silver, dishes, and other miscellaneous furniture items and library fixtures.  Books are primarily art and music, but there will be other subjects. ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT GROUP OFFERED

IMPRESSIONISTIC PORTRAITS COMING TO GAA
On Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at Sparr Heights Community Center, Julie Snyder will demonstrate portraits at the monthly meeting of the Glendale Art Association in their new meeting place. As well as teaching, her fine art hangs in collections and galleries across the US.

The cost for members/guest is a $4 entry fee, mini-show is $3 per painting.

MEDITATION CLASSES OFFERED
Kadampa Meditation Center California is a non-profit organization that offers meditation classes to help people find inner peace and happiness. Currently, Kadampa Meditation Center California is offering an eight week course in La Cañada and Glendale titled “Freedom from Stress, Frustration & Anger.”

In April and May, the mediation class titled “Happiness from a Different Source” takes place on Fridays and Sundays.

On Friday, April 6, 13, 20, 27 and May 4, 11, 18, 25 the class takes place from noon to 1 p.m. at Crescenta-Cañada YMCA, 1930 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada. The cost is $5.

On Sunday, April 8, 15, 22, 29 and May 6, 13, 20, 27 classes are from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Griffith Manor Park Building, 1551 Flower St. in Glendale. The cost is $10.

SIERRA CLUB PRESENTS EUBANK
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group presents Danielle Eubank’s, “The Phoenician Ship Expedition,” on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles County La Crescenta Public Library.  Enter on La Crescenta Avenue for the meeting room and parking.

Eubank served as an expedition artist on a replicated 600 BCE sailboat originally built in the ancient land of Phoenicia and Syria to circumnavigate Africa. She will tell the story of how it was built, where it sailed and how she sailed in it as a crew member. Along with her story, she will sketch images and anecdotes of life aboard this vessel and show her original artwork created for the expedition.

DAVISON TO GIVE AAUW PRESENTATION
American Association of University Women, Glendale branch, presents Joyce Davison, local resident and president of Ahead with Horses. This a nonprofit organization that provides unique and effective development therapy through horses and the environment to disabled, disadvantaged and other special needs children. She will give a presentation on April 14 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on how this organization helps children physically, mentally, socially and emotionally, enabling them to live more independent and better lives. SENIOR HEALThY LIVING EXPO
A senior healthy living expo is being held on Saturday, April 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free services from eldercare experts; free admission. There will be entertainment, free parking and refreshments. Events during the day include medical wellness checkup: by a local physician, eldercare legal services by Vanessa Terzian, blood pressure assessment by Gentle Hearts Home Care, plus much more.

NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC
Glendale Noon Concerts is a free admission concert series taking place every first and third Wednesday from 12:10-12:40 p.m. in the restored chapel and sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Glendale (downtown at Louise & Wilson, no religious affiliation).

The next concert is on April 18 and features the Kewa Ensemble: violinist Jacqueline Suzuki and pianist Rosa LoGiudice will perform “After the Tryst” by James MacMillan and will be joined by cellist Pam de Almeida in piano trios by Arno Babajanian and Astor Piazzolla.

FOLK TREE HOSTS TRUNK SHOWS
In the weeks leading up to Mother’s Day, The Folk Tree hosts trunk shows for Los Angeles artists Cathy Ashworth, Ulla Anobile and Bibiana Abello. Visiting the gallery for three consecutive weekends, these artists have created a selection of pieces with a celebration of mother’s in mind.  Painter/mixed media artist Cathy Ashworth will be here April 21-22; paper maché/felt artist Ulla Anobile comes April 28-29; and jewelry designer Bibiana Abello shows her pieces May 5-6. All the artists will be present from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. both days and the public is invited to meet them and find out more about their work.

The Folk Tree is an art store and gallery focusing on handmade folk and decorative arts from around the globe, especially those of Mexico. It is located at 217 S. Fair Oaks Ave., minutes walking distance from the Gold Line’s Del Mar station, and just south of Old Pasadena.

CLARK JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL REUNION planned
An Anderson W. Clark Junior High School reunion is planned for April 21. The reunion, sponsored by Class of ‘56, is being held at the La Crescenta Woman’s Club from noon to 6:30 p.m. A spaghetti supper is being served at 3:30 p.m.

Each classmate should bring a salad or dessert. Admission is $20 per classmate with one guest admitted free.

The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada has scheduled three interesting programs for April and members of the community are invited to attend the luncheon meetings.
