Parent Meeting to Explain Transitional Kindergarten

Parents of Glendale and La Crescenta children eligible for the brand-new grade level of Transitional Kindergarten are invited to a Parent Meeting for Transitional Kindergarten, to explain why the new grade level has been created and who is eligible to attend, under new state law.

The Parent Meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 25, at 6:30 p.m. in the Glendale Unified School District Board Room, 223 N. Jackson St., downtown Glendale.

Transitional Kindergarten is a new public school grade level in California, being gradually introduced for four-year-olds with Autumn birthdays. The first TK students, with birthdays in November of 2007, are enrolling for TK classes at select schools, now. Classes begin August, 20, 2012.

The California Legislature created the new developmentally-appropriate grade level for children younger than five years old who used to attend regular Kindergarten, sometimes before they were ready. Transitional Kindergarten is intended to act as a bridge between pre-school and kindergarten for children with fall birthdays.

“We know there are a lot of questions about this new grade level,” said Dr. Richard Sheehan, Superintendent of Schools. “We want to explain to parents of children in this age group what to expect from Transitional Kindergarten, and how to register for it.”
