Today, Rep. Adam Schiff, a senior Member of the Intelligence Committee, released the following statement:

“One year ago tonight, we received the news that a team of U.S. Navy SEALs had finally killed Osama bin Laden after a decade-long manhunt. For all of us who remember the fear, anger and incredible sadness that gripped the nation in the days after the 9/11 attacks, there remains both a grim satisfaction that justice was meted out to the worst mass murderer in American history and a deep appreciation of the thousands of people – intelligence officers, military planners, the SEALs themselves, and the President and his national security team – for their dedication to the mission and their belief in its success.

“The struggle against Islamic extremism continues. While the al Qaeda that launched the September 11 attacks has, to a great extent, been shattered and its ideology rejected by the vast majority of the world’s Muslims, we still face a formidable challenge from Al Qaeda in Pakistan, the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen, al Shabab in Somalia and other al Qaeda affiliates that have emerged in recent years.

“I will continue to support policies to combat terrorism on the one hand, while also working to build a better relationship between the United States and the Muslim world. And a year after the death of Bin Laden, we remember the sacrifice of those who have lost their lives to terrorism and those who fight every day against it, and in its shadow.”
