MOUNTVIEW HOSTS PRESENTATION
Aurora Morales from the Alzheimer’s Association will be speaking on the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s and the benefits of early detection and diagnosis.

She will be speaking at Mountview Retirement Community on May 3 at 2 p.m.

Mountview is located at 2640 Honolulu Ave. in Montrose.

 BIRD WATCHING/PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS
The “Beginning Bird Watching and Photography Class” is scheduled for Saturday, May 5 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Deukmejian Park and is filling up fast.

Don’t miss out on this chance to learn about the local birds and gain some valuable tips on taking nature photos from photographer Raul Roa. The morning session begins at Trails and Open Space office at Deukmejian, then moves to the field.

Bring binoculars, a bird identification book, and a camera with a long lens (if possible).

This class is free, but you must call (818) 548-3795 to reserve your spot.

Deukmejian Wilderness Park is located at 3429 Markridge Road in La Crescenta.

NATAL FITNESS CLASSES NOW AVAILABLE AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA is now hosting pre- and post-natal fitness classes and personal training sessions.  Studies have shown that going through labor and delivery is an athletic event for which you should train. The purpose of the natal fit program is to assist pregnant women in keeping a level of fitness that will optimize the outcome of the pregnancy.  Also, the benefits include more energy, fewer aches and pains, less weight gain and a faster labor.

The Natal Fit program is designed by Dawn Weyand, who is certified by the American Council on Exercise (ACE).  Weyand has specifically designed this program to optimize a woman’s pregnancy and give them and their baby a healthy beginning.

EDUCATION CLASSES FOR PARENTS OF SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA and the City of La Cañada are hosting parent and education classes for parents of children with special needs on Thursdays through June 14 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the CCY patio room.

This is a support resource for parents of children with special needs. Topics include neurobiological and psychological disorders along with issues that arise from parenting any child with special needs. Additional future topics will be scheduled.

‘TENNESSEE IN SUMMER’ AT SIDEWALK STUDIO
Sal Romeo ETC and SST Productions will present Joe Besecker’s award-winning play, “Tennessee in the Summer,” based on the life of the famed playwright Tennessee Williams at Sidewalk Studio Theatre in Burbank on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. through May 20.

COFFEE GALLERY CALENDARS EVENTS
Coffee Gallery in Altadena hosts a variety of events every week.

Tuesdays are “Comedy Open Mic” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. All comics get to do a five-minute set. Performers range from those performing for the first time to seasoned professionals. Hosted by Scott Berger.

Thursday is “Artisan Alley” from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Artisan Alley includes two featured musical acts, two musical open mics (open to anyone in the community), the works of a featured artist in the back room (art changes every two weeks), and a live DJ. Hosted by The Definition.

Friday is “Music Open Mic” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Music open mic allows anyone in the community to come on stage and sing a song or play a tune. The sign-up sheet stays open throughout the night and everyone gets to perform twice. Rotating hosts.

Saturday is “Potlikker Showcase” from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.  that offers an eclectic mix of musical performers, poets, spoken word readings, Americana music and a live DJ. Hosted by DJ Beatgozon.

Finally, Sundays are “Music Open Mic” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Music open mic allows anyone in the community to come on stage and sing a song or play a tune. The sign-up sheet stays open throughout the night and everyone gets to perform twice. Hosted by King.

MEDITATION CLASSES OFFERED
Kadampa Meditation Center California is a non-profit organization that offers meditation classes to help people find inner peace and happiness. Currently, Kadampa Meditation Center California is offering an eight week course in La Cañada and Glendale titled “Freedom from Stress, Frustration & Anger.”

In April and May, the mediation class titled “Happiness from a Different Source” takes place on Fridays and Sundays.

On Friday, May 4, 11, 18, 25 the class takes place from noon to 1 p.m. at Crescenta-Cañada YMCA, 1930 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada. The cost is $5.

On Sunday, May 6, 13, 20, 27 classes are from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Griffith Manor Park Building, 1551 Flower St. in Glendale. The cost is $10.

LCVB HOSTS VOLUNTEER GARDENING DAY
La Cañada Valley Beautiful is hosting a volunteer gardening day on Saturday, May 5 from 10 a.m.  to 1 p.m. at the La Cañada Library.

Participants will learn about California native maintenance and there will be live demonstrations and hands-on help.

Featured are California native, Mediterranean, Australian and Chilean gardens

Bring clippers, gloves, a sunhat and also bring friends and questions about sustainable gardening.

FRIENDS OF SILVER LAKE LIBRARY BENEFIT FROM SHOW
The Glendale Art Association (GAA) presents an eclectic, juried exhibition of paintings, photography and sculpture by its esteemed members. All are invited to the artists’ reception on Saturday, May 5 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for an evening of fine art, fine food, fine music (harpist Xavier Montes) and all for a great cause – Friends of Silver Lake Library. Meet the artists who are each bringing up to eight pieces of their artwork.

Attendance is free. The show continues through June 1. Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

FOLK TREE HOSTS TRUNK SHOWS
In the weeks leading up to Mother’s Day, The Folk Tree hosts trunk shows for Los Angeles artists Cathy Ashworth, Ulla Anobile and Bibiana Abello. Jewelry designer Bibiana Abello shows her pieces May 5-6.  She will be present from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. both days and the public is invited to meet them and find out more about their work.

The Folk Tree is an art store and gallery focusing on handmade folk and decorative arts from around the globe, especially those of Mexico.  It is located at 217 S. Fair Oaks Ave., minutes walking distance from the Gold Line’s Del Mar station, and just south of Old Pasadena.



GLEN MEM OFFERING WALK-A-DILE WALKING PROGRAM
Glendale Memorial 50-plus walking club meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the information table on the first floor of the Eagle Rock Plaza.

CONCERT BY CALTECH SINGERS, ENSEMBLES
The Caltech Chamber Singers and the Caltech Chamber Music Ensembles will present a joint concert on Sunday, May 6 at 3:30 p.m. in Caltech’s Dabney Lounge
in Pasadena. This is a rare event, as it will be the first time they have combined for a concert.

HIKING THE SWISS ALPS ON AGENDA
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club will present Ed and Helen Maurers’, “Hiking the Swiss Alps” on Tuesday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles County Public Library in La Crescenta.  Please enter on La Crescenta Avenue for the meeting room and parking.

The Maurers will talk and show their pictures taken while leading long distance hikes in the Swiss Alps and along an ancient pilgrimage route in France.  The contrast between these two locales is striking and the pictures do much to explain their enthusiasm for discovering foreign countries on foot.

ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT GROUP OFFERED
Mountview Retirement Home sponsors a monthly free Alzheimer’s Support Group on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. The next group will be held on Tuesday, May 8 at 7 p.m.  Mountview Retirement Home is located at 2640 Honolulu, Montrose and can be reached at (818) 248-6737. PIZZAZZ IN THE KITCHEN
The Pasadena Women’s Connection presents “Pizzazz in the Kitchen” luncheon and program on Wednesday, May 9 at 11:30 a.m. at the Altadena Country Club.  Nancy Sherman, director and consultant with Pampered Chef, will demonstrate garnishing tricks and making the best use of the latest kitchen tools.  She will also share a special treat of home baked potato chips.

Sherman, a motivational speaker, will describe how “Adoption Can Mean Twice Loved.”

Special musical entertainment will be provided by vocalist Carolyn Fallin.

There will also be a “white elephant” fundraising sale.
