Foothills Fail to Qualify at CIF Masters
By Leonard COUTIN
Cerritos College was the home to the southern section CIF Master meet last weekend. Those who qualified in the top five in each event or who made a state qualifying mark moved on to the state track and field championship. The finals are taking place in Clovis on Friday at Buchanan High School.
Flintridge Prep twins Gareth and Barrett Weiss, who successfully vaulted their way to first and second in their division, did not qualify at the master meet where the bar started at 13’ 9”.
Arcadia senior Alex McElwee ran the 400m (48.48) and is seeded ninth. Teammate Sergio Gonzalez qualified in both the 1600m and 3200. Gonzalez will only run the 3200m at state, seeded seventh with 9:06.88.
Nitro Michael Davis is seeded eighth in the 200m with a time of 21.61.
This year saw some changes in the rules to level athletic abilities. In the past, winners from the southern section or the city section may not have the same caliber of athletes. Before, an athlete could move on to the state meet running slower than the sixth place position by just participating in another division. New rules leveled the playing field for all competition to move forward to the state CIF track and field championships.
