Sleepy-eyed and Satisfied

I’m happy to report that I think I have caught up on my lost sleep of last Friday/Saturday.

The reason I was sleep deprived, of course, was the 19th annual Prom Plus event held over at the Crescenta-Cañada YMCA after the prom.

Beginning at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday, CVHS seniors and their guests started arriving at the Y after attending the prom. They were eager to try their hand in the casino, ride the mechanical bull, climb the rock wall or zip down the zip line.

And there was no problem keeping them fueled with food donated by Los Gringos Locos and Giuseppe’s Pizzeria, plus much more.

Kids could be found choosing their [temporary] tattoo; waiting for a balloon creation; outfitted in a green poncho for Pop Noggins; seated for a portrait by a caricaturist; or entertained by Rebecca “Fireplug” Nelson who, with her partner Carlos, kept in Cirque du Soleil theme walking around the Y on stilts or balancing on an oversized ball, dressed in perfect costumes.

A registration table kept track of the students as they arrived while volunteers, including GUSD school board member Nayiri Nahabedian, dealt cards or worked the kitchen or helped in the prize room or patrolled the parking lots and the Y facility until the event ended at 5 a.m.

There’s a lot of work that goes into Prom Plus every year and, as president, I understand the commitment made by so many volunteers. They’re the finest around and it’s my pleasure to acknowledge them … we definitely couldn’t do it without them.

And speaking of the finest, CV Weekly is excited to unveil our inaugural CV Weekly – The Finest 2012.

Since I launched the paper in 2009, folks have asked when we were going to host a finest issue, giving our residents a voice as to their favorite who/what/where. Where can you find the finest burger? The finest hiking trail? The finest theater? Who is the finest mechanic? The finest plumber?  The finest veterinarian?

We have so many choices, not only in the foothills area but beyond, of places to eat, shop and be entertained. We’ve discovered people who provide excellent service, restaurants that offer terrific food, shops that have superior products – now it’s time to share your opinion with your neighbors!

Ballots will be in the paper this week through mid-July (this week on page 23). Take the time to vote. You can also go online and submit a ballot electronically or walk or mail your ballot in. Only one vote per person, please.

We’ll tally the nominees and in September – coinciding with our three year anniversary – announce the winners.

We are so proud to be the community newspaper and to give you the chance to voice who/what/where you feel is the finest.
