The 2012 CSA Mustang (10 & under) league championship game between Rountree Glass and Jason’s Honda took place on June 12 at Montrose Park.
Jason’s came onto the field undefeated through the playoffs, hoping for the win.
Rountree had lost only a single game in the playoffs, and needed to beat Jason’s to stay alive.
Rountree jumped ahead with an early lead scoring two runs in the first and three in the second on hits by Brendon Pehar, Evan Aceytuno, Miles Ransweller and a triple by Jaxon Ziegenfuss. But a solid defense by Jason’s and excellent pitching by Walker Baggett and Manny Ortiz stymied their advance with Rountree Glass scoring only one more run over the next four innings on hits by David Case, Maddox England and Pehar.
Solid pitching from Case and Boon Fay resulted in Jason’s only run in the first five innings off a double by Justin Montoya, knocking in Will Hardy from second.
In the sixth, Jason’s offense came alive, opening the game up by scoring six runs on a single by Justin Montoya, doubles from Baggett, Alex Salvador and Kagen Christoph, a triple from Ian Tinkham, and a home run by Manny Carrasco. This gave Jason’s a one-run lead heading into the seventh.
Jason’s put their ace pitcher, Alex Salvador, on the mound who allowed only one run in the seventh, leading to a tie with the game knotted at seven apiece.
Justin Pauly was the first batter for Jason’s in the bottom of the seventh, who smashed a ball deep into centerfield for a stand-up triple.
Ortiz stepped up next, knocking a solid base hit into left field, scoring Pauly, and ending the game with an 8-7 victory for Jason’s Honda.
Both teams played a solid game, and the outcome wasn’t determined until the bottom of the last inning. It was everything that a fan, parent or player could have hoped for in a championship game, and both teams should be congratulated on their season and their play in this game.
