Free Weight Loss Seminars at GAMC

The Center for Weight Loss at Glendale Adventist Medical Center is offering free seminars with board-certified physicians to discuss the safety and effectiveness of surgical and non-surgical weight-loss options during the summer months.

Free surgical option seminars are being held on Tuesdays, July 24 and Aug. 28. Non-surgical weight-loss option seminars are being held on Thursdays, June 28, July 12, July 26, Aug. 9 and Aug. 23.

Fireworks Tickets On Sale

Tickets to the July 4th fireworks display are now available. The show is held each year at La Crescenta Elementary School. The advance sale tickets are $7 each with children 7 and under free. Tickets sold the day of the event will cost $10. Tickets can be purchased at the CV Weekly or the CV Chamber office or at Bob Smith Toyota. You can also buy tickets on July 4th using the “drive thru” ticket line at Prospect and La Crescenta avenues from noon to 3 p.m.

VanguardRep presents La Cañada Flintridge Shakespeare Festival

Beginning Friday, June 29, and running through Sunday, Aug. 5, VanguardRep will present its third annual summer festival, La Cañada Flintridge Shakespeare Festival (LCFShakes). Inspired adaptations of Shakespeare’s classic love stories “Juliet & her Romeo” and “Twelfth Night” will play in repertory Thursday through Sunday evenings in the outdoor Byrnes Amphitheater on the historic campus of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. Performance dates (curtain at 8:30 p.m.):

“Juliet & her Romeo” on June 29-July 1; July 12-13; July 21-22; July 26-27; Aug. 4-5.

“Twelfth Night” on July 6-8; July 14-15; July 19-20; July 28-29; Aug. 2-3.

DBSA Offers support group

Depression Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) has a support group meeting every Tuesday at Vallejo Drive Adventist Church in Glendale every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. DBSA provides hope, help, and support through peer-based, recovery-oriented, empowering services, and resources when people need them and how they need to receive them. Support groups bring people together who understand the up, downs and frustrations of depression or bipolar disorder. DBSA support groups are a safe confidential place to talk about and overcome the day-to-day and long-term challenges of mental health issues.

Meditation for Harmonious Life

La Cañada Presbyterian Church will give three cheers to the red, white and blue at the “Americana Concert,” a stirring program of patriotic music and other beloved American tunes on Sunday, July 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. Emcee Tyler Wright, president and CEO of the Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, will provide inspirational and comic commentary, and recite patriotic poems.

Performing will be LCPC’s Chancel Choir and Orchestra, alto soloist Diane Wallace.

Jason Jones guest of LCV Republican Women Fed

Jason Jones will be the guest speaker at the La Crescenta Valley Republican Women Federated luncheon on Thursday, July 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 pm. at the La Cañada Country Club. Jason’s talk is entitled “The Great Campaign.”

Jones is the founder of HERO [Human-Rights Education and Relief Organization], a non-profit group that promotes human dignity regardless of ability, age, status, race or geography. His projects include spearheading a recent HERO initiative to bring clean water to suffering refugees in South Sudan. Jones was the host of “The Facts of Life,” a radio show broadcast worldwide.

The Wonderful Magical World of Neon

Eric Lynxwiler of the Museum of Neon Art (MONA) will give his audience a glowing glimpse into the nighttime world of neon signage in the Los Angeles area. His talk, “The Wonderful Magical World of Neon” will be presented on Thursday, July 26 at 7 p.m. at the Glendale Public Library Auditorium.

For his talk, aided with two slide projectors, he will explain how the radiantly colored tubes of glass are used to create the alluring signage that is associated so closely with nightlife in vintage Los Angeles.

 This event is sponsored by the Associates of Brand Library & Art Center, The Glendale Historical Society, and Library, Arts & Culture.  Admission is free and open to the public.  Parking is free at the Marketplace parking structure across from the library with validation.

Car Classic showcase coming to Burbank

The Downtown Burbank Car Classic, an exciting showcase for restored and pre-1974 sports cars, exotics and hot rods, will cruise into Downtown Burbank with engines roaring and horns a-blazing on Saturday, July 28 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Contemporary jazz pianist and composer David Benoit will perform from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a cappella legends The Alley Cats taking the stage at 5 p.m. Included in the six block festival will be lots of free family entertainment and car-related vendor booths. The Downtown Burbank Car Classic is free and open to the public.

Coordinated in partnership with the Petersen Automotive Museum, cars will stretch along San Fernando Boulevard from Magnolia Boulevard to Angeleno Avenue as well as adjacent streets in Downtown Burbank’s shopping, dining, and entertainment district. The Petersen Museum will feature 1929 DuPont, 1928 Studebaker and 1934 La Salle cars from its collection.

The 51st Annual Sunland-Tujunga Watermelon Festival takes place Aug. 10-12 at Sunland Park. Delicious free watermelon will be available to cool down on hot summer days. Coffee Gallery in Altadena hosts a variety of events every week.

Tuesdays are “Comedy Open Mic” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. All comics get to do a five-minute set. Performers range from those performing for the first time to seasoned professionals. Hosted by Scott Berger.

Thursday is “Artisan Alley” from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Artisan Alley includes two featured musical acts, two musical open mics (open to anyone in the community), the works of a featured artist in the back room (art changes every two weeks), and a live DJ. Hosted by The Definition.

Friday is “Music Open Mic” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Music open mic allows anyone in the community to come on stage and sing a song or play a tune. The sign-up sheet stays open throughout the night and everyone gets to perform twice. Rotating hosts.

Saturday is “Potlikker Showcase” from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.  that offers an eclectic mix of musical performers, poets, spoken word readings, Americana music and a live DJ. Hosted by DJ Beatgozon.

CVHS CHORAL ALUMS WANTED

Former members of choral groups at Crescenta Valley High School are invited to take part in the CVHS Alumni Choral. The group, composed of CVHS choral alumni men and women, rehearse once a week on Wednesdays from 7:15 p.m. – 9:15 p.m., at the Glendale First United Methodist Church. The group performs for local civic groups and retirement homes in Pasadena, Glendale, La Crescenta, Montrose and Duarte during the holiday season and again in the late spring/early summer. After the holiday season performances the group will resume rehearsals in the middle of January.
