It began with Girl Scout Troop 15021 searching for a service project for their Bronze Award. All the girls liked animals, so it was a somewhat easy (and unanimous) decision to collect items for the Glendale Humane Society.

The girls attended the Wags and Whiskers Walk on Honolulu Avenue in early May and afterwards set up camp outside Andersen’s Pet Store asking for donations. The girls found that generally people were very generous and gave money, which the girls took inside Andersen’s to purchase items.

Additionally, a website was built promoting their involvement with the Wags and Whiskers Walk. The Troop received $200 in donations that went directly to the Glendale Humane Society.

Though they had acquired many bags of donated items, the girls decided to donate $250 from their cookie sales proceeds to purchase more needed items. Every year after cookie selling season, the girls choose a non-profit to donate goods or money. In the past, they have donated to Girl Scouts in Japan after the tsunami and the American Red Cross after the earthquake in Haiti.

After six weeks of collecting items for the dogs and cats, the Troop went down to the Glendale Humane Society to present all the new beds, leashes, collars, toys, brushes and food for the animals.

The project gave the girls a sense of pride knowing that they were helping the little animals have a more comfortable life while they awaited to be adopted.
