SETS IN STEPS SQUARE DANCE CLUB
The Sets in Steps Square Dance Club is sponsoring a new square dance class for beginners or those who want to refresh their dancing. It begins on Thursday evening, Sept. 13 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the La Cañada Community Center. The first three dances are free.

To introduce the class, there will be a social time with hors d’oeuvres before the instruction. John Hyde is caller. It is better to have couples, but singles are welcome also. The price is $6 cash per week. This is a fun way to get some exercise.

DBSA OFFERS SUPPORT GROUP
Depression Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) has a support group meeting every Tuesday at Vallejo Drive Adventist Church in Glendale every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. DBSA provides hope, help, and support through peer-based, recovery-oriented, empowering services, and resources when people need them and how they need to receive them. Support groups bring people together who understand the up, downs and frustrations of depression or bipolar disorder. DBSA support groups are a safe confidential place to talk about and overcome the day-to-day and long-term challenges of mental health issues.

MUSIC APPRECIATION CLASS
Dr. Ted Stern, professor of music at Glendale Community College, will again conduct his off-campus music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This ongoing series is for musicians and non-musicians alike who appreciate the history of music.  This semester will address the topic: “An In-depth Look at Six Composers – Monteverdi, Bach, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Verdi and Stravinsky.”

Each semester offers new and interesting information. Dr. Stern weaves music examples with cultural history to increase our understanding of the evolution of music. Classes are held at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, located at 2700 Montrose Avenue in Montrose. The classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 18 and are held each Tuesday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., continuing through Dec. 18. The cost for the 14-week classes is $90. Everyone is welcome! TASTE OF GREECE AT GREEK FEST
The 54th Annual Pasadena Greek Fest will be held Friday through Sunday, Sept. 14, 15 and 16, at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia.

Fest hours are from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday; noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday; and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m.

Fun activities for the entire family include Greek cuisine, cooking demonstration, a sports bar and cigar lounge, art, culture, Greek lectures, wine tasting, shopping, live entertainment and Kid’s Fun Zone. A special grand prize dream travel certificate valued at $2,500 will be given away. Raffle prizes awarded throughout the weekend include a 51” 3D HD TV, apple iPads, cash and gift certificates totaling over $10,000.

BOLTON HALL DOCENT TRAINING
Beginning Sept. 15, Bolton Hall Museum is offering a new docent training class. This is an opportunity for interested individuals to learn the unique history of Sunland/Tujunga and Bolton Hall while serving as a volunteer docent. Docents can anticipate spending three hours a month to welcome visitors to Bolton Hall and another two hours monthly in training and sharing experiences with other docents.

Classes begin Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon and continue on the third Saturday of most months. Admission to the class is free to Little Landers Historical Society members and $20 for non-members (which establishes an individual membership for you).

MOONDAY EAST FEATURES CANTALUPO, WALLE
Moonday East will feature celebrated poet R.G. Cantalupo and Washington State poet Connie Walle on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. at Flintridge Bookstore in La Cañada, hosted this month by Lois P. Jones. Cantalupo’s work has been published in over 100 literary journals throughout the United States, Canada and England. His book of poetry “Say” was a runner-up for the John Ciardi award in poetry. Cantalupo was a two-time regional finalist for the American College Theater Festival, and his play “Heart” was presented at the Kennedy Center as a national finalist. Cantalupo is the artistic director and founder of The Little Theater in West Los Angeles where he continues to write and direct plays.

Connie Walle resides in Tacoma, Wash. and is president and founder of Puget Sound Poetry Connection where she hosts the Distinguished Writer Series now in its 23rd year. She also founded Our Own Words, a teen writing contest. Her awards include 1998 Margaret K Williams Award in support of the arts and Washington Poets Association Faith Beamer Cooks Award.

REEL ART FILM SERIES HOSTED AT GLENDALE LIBRARY
The Associates of Brand Library has launched its REEL ART Film Series. The film “!Women Art Revolution,” a documentary film about the Feminist Art Movement of the 1970s, will screen on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Glendale Public Library Auditorium.

This award-winning documentary by Lynn Hershman-Leeson provides a fascinating chronicle through intimate interviews, art, and rarely seen archival film and video footage.

“!Women Art Revolution” reveals how the Feminist Art Movement fused free speech and politics to radically transform the art and culture of the times.

The film highlights significant – and often outrageous – moments, many of which played out in Southern California.

A discussion will take place after the film featuring artist, educator, and activist Cheri Gaulke

PROSTATE EXAM OFFERED
Men 50 and older are encouraged to join Glendale Adventist Medical Center in the fight against prostate cancer by having a prostate cancer screening on Thursday, Sept. 20 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the hospital (Cancer Center) located at 381 Merrill Ave, Glendale.

Screening consists of digital rectal exam and a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test. The cost is $10. Glendale Adventist Medical Center physicians and physician residents will provide the screenings.

In 2011, an estimated 240,890 new prostate cancer cases occurred in the United States. In most cases, there are no symptoms associated with early prostate cancer. It remains the second leading cause of cancer related mortality among men. Many men don’t know they have prostate cancer because it can occur and spread without any symptoms.  However, The survival rate for prostate cancer is quite high, especially when diagnosed early.

NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC
Glendale Noon Concerts is a free admission concert series taking place every first and third Wednesday from 12:10-12:40 p.m. in the restored chapel and sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Glendale (downtown at Louise & Wilson, no religious affiliation).

Four debut Los Angeles-based authors who write brave, thrilling, heart-pounding and romantic stories about near-future Los Angeles come together for one night only at Once Upon a Time.  Author, director (“Revolution: Step Up!”) Scott Speer (“Immortal City”), author, screenwriter Lissa Price (“Starters”), author Marie Lu (“Legend”) and author Jennifer Bosworth (“Struck”).

AUTHOR BALABAN AT OUAT
On Saturday, Oct. 6 at
7 p.m., author, actor, director and producer Bob Balaban presents middle-grade book “Creature From The Seventh Grade” at Once Upon a Time Bookstore.

Balaban is an award-winning actor-producer-writer-director. He’s appeared in nearly 100 movies including “Gosford Park,” “Midnight Cowboy,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and all of Christopher Guest’s films. He is also the author of the popular McGrowl series for young readers. His latest children’s book tells the story of a nerdy, unpopular seventh-grader named Charlie Drinkwater who morphs into a mutant dinosaur and becomes an instant celebrity. This very funny book is a perfect title for reluctant readers ages 9- 14.
