Montrose Search and Rescue members Reserve Commander Janet Henderson and Reserve Chief Mike Leum were honored by Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich at the L.A. County Board of Supervisors Sept. 18 meeting.
They were recognized by the supervisor for their efforts in rescuing a young girl who was found floating face down in a river near a campground.
On June 29, the MSR team was continuing their search for a missing hiker in the Stonyvale Picnic area in Angeles National Forest. Henderson and Leum were on one team that had just walked away from base camp to begin their search when they noticed a baby face down in the water near where family members were picnicking. The baby was unconscious when they arrived.
Henderson saw the little girl; the mother had lifted her out of the water and handed her to Leum who performed lifesaving maneuvers. The little girl began to breathe, and the team and the mother walked with her out of the area and helped stabilize her for transportation to a local hospital.
