The Crescenta Valley Town Council’s Running the Foothills 5K Run/Walk was held on Sept.22. About 200 runners joined in to help support schools and the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce.
The run began on Rosemont Avenue in front of Two Strike Park and wove through neighborhood streets with runners crossing the finish line back in the parking lot at Two Strike.
Mike Baldwin usually spends his time at Two Strike with fellow veterans at Memorial and Veteran day ceremonies or raising funds and awareness for the Two Strike Park memorial wall. However on Sept. 22, Baldwin was preparing to run his first 5K.
“A year ago I didn’t think I would be able run a 5K,” he said.
Baldwin is a member, and fan, of Linda Taix’s Extreme Boot Camp. He attributed his healthy weight loss and 5K running shape to his new workout regime.
“And now [his wife] Carolyn has started [the program],” he said.
Taix got everyone stretching before the run and several of her students were participating in the early morning event.
Money brought in from the 5K went to support the CV Chamber programs including its scholarship program. A portion of the entry fee was given back to the community via schools. Runners were allowed to choose a school they wished to support.
Rosemont Middle School was very well represented with both kids and parents running to support the school’s sports programs.
Seventh graders Isabela Gallegos and Mary Spearman were looking forward to the race. Although both girls were swimmers they had also run a couple of races with track and field in the past and were ready for the 5 K challenge.
Brothers Nelson and Quincy Lunt, both 6 years old, ran for their school, La Crescenta Elementary.
“We run for our school and from our school,” Nelson joked.
The first person to cross the finish line was Conor Bowman with a time of 20:09. The first woman to cross was Elizabeth Jordan at 20:40 and the first kid 15 and under was Lucas Martos-Repath at 22:27.
