Apaches Dominate CV

Having maintained a perfect season with just two weeks remaining, Arcadia was the favorite to win Tuesday’s tennis match at Crescenta Valley. The most matches the Apaches had lost in league play was just five against Burbank and six in the league overall against Poly Pasadena.

The Apaches were coming off a 15-3 blowout against Arroyo High School, but the Falcons were looking to extend their winning streak after beating Hoover 12-7 and wanted to send a message to the best team in the league.

However, the message they delivered is not what they intended to send at all.

The Falcons just couldn’t handle the talent that Arcadia presented. Frances Dean, Arcadia’s No. 1 single player, didn’t concede a single game in her three contests and Angelica Zhou, Arcadia’s No. 2, lost just one of her three.

The Falcons managed to make some headway against Sharlene Song, the No. 3 player, when Melanie Voskanian won the only singles match for the Falcons, beating Song 7-5.

Overall, the Falcons managed to win only 10 games compared to 55 for Arcadia.

If the Falcons were looking for any respite in doubles, they were mistaken.

Coming off her ankle injury against Hoover, Jackie Dilanchyan teamed up with Viktoriya Shumakova for the doubles team.

“Jacqueline is still recovering,” cautioned head coach Sam Hyun.

This was apparent when Dilanchyan took to the court, obviously not in her usual form. The duo lost all of their matches, including a heartbreaking tie break against their No. 3, Chris Gao/Janice Kim.

Whereas Sarah O/Angela Seo were the shining doubles last time against Hoover, they managed to win only four games in their matches against the Apaches.

Alexa Gregorian/Selinne Auvazian, the Falcons No. 3 team, were the only ones to post a victory in the doubles column for Crescenta Valley.

Overall, Hyun said the key to Arcadia’s success was the commitment they had to the game.

“They practice more hours than us,” he said. “We need more committed players.”

With the loss, the Falcons fall 4-3 in league.

The Falcons travel to Glendale High School today at 3:30 p.m.
