All summer, and into the autumn heat, planning has been ongoing in preparation for National Charity League, Inc., Glendale Chapter’s rummage sale known as Sellebration. The annual event, which is a favorite among the community members it benefits, has been hosted by the chapter for more than 15 years, and this year will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Pacific Community Center, 501 S. Pacific Ave. in Glendale.

Leading the mammoth project for the second year are Lynn Drewe, Christine Holmquist, Tracie Heileson, and Karen Gee-McAuley. In addition to raising funds for the 30-some philanthropies the chapter supports, Sellebration fills a need by making high quality goods including clothing, electronics, house wares, toys and brand new merchandise available at rock bottom prices.

“Last year a couple came away with bicycles for all three of their children,” recalled Holmquist, who is in charge of scheduling the shifts for the chapter’s members – 130-plus pairs of mothers and daughters who will work side by side, accomplishing sorting, set up, cashiering and clean up.

The impact of the sale was perhaps best captured at last year’s sale when a young woman, who had recently transitioned from a homeless shelter, was able to afford dishes and furnishings for her very first apartment.

Each year at the end of the sale, all unsold merchandise is packed up by the Salvation Army, which in turn provides clothing racks and equipment for the chapter’s use during the sale.

As important as the value is to the community members is that the net proceeds of the sale contribute to the chapter’s budget for financial assistance to its many worthy philanthropies.

“Sellebration is a unified effort by all members of the chapter toward a common goal,” said 4th Vice President of Ways and Means Maura Brown. “[It] provides an opportunity for our daughters to observe how many of our belongings can be reused and appreciated by the less fortunate.”
