Canada Cres Dems hold membership meeting

The Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club will hold its next general membership meeting at the United Democratic Headquarters (UDH) on Sunday, Oct. 14 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The UDH is an outreach and volunteer office which has the support  of eight regional Democratic Clubs, including the Cañada Crescenta group, and is located at 519 S. DBSA Offers support group

Depression Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) has a support group meeting every Tuesday at Vallejo Drive Adventist Church in Glendale every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. DBSA provides hope, help, and support through peer-based, recovery oriented empowering services, and resources when people need them and how they need to receive them. Support groups bring people together who understand the up, downs and frustrations of depression or bipolar disorder. DBSA support groups are a safe confidential place to talk about and overcome the day-to-day and long-term challenges of mental health issues.

Music Appreciation Class

Dr. Ted Stern, professor of music at Glendale Community College, will again conduct his off-campus music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This ongoing series is for musicians and non-musicians alike who appreciate the history of music.  This semester will address the topic: “An In-depth Look at Six Composers – Monteverdi, Bach, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Verdi and Stravinsky.”

Each semester offers new and interesting information. Dr. Stern weaves music examples with cultural history to increase our understanding of the evolution of music. Classes are held at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, located at 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose. The classes are held each Tuesday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., continuing through Dec. 18. The cost for the 14-week classes is $90. Everyone is welcome! Orthopedic Guild to hold annual luncheon

The La Cañada Flintridge Orthopedic Guild, dedicated solely to the support of the Charitable Care Program for children of Orthopedic Hospital of Los Angeles, will present its annual author’s luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at the Angeles National Golf Club in Sunland. Featured are Katie Machoskie who wrote the children’s book, “Andrew’s Marble,” Hadleigh Garrard author of “Untrodden, Trails of Truth,” and local author Jo Anne Sadler who just released “Crescenta Valley Pioneers and their Legacies.”

The doors open at 9:30 a.m. with the program starting at 10:30 a.m. followed by a luncheon at 12:15 p.m. Prizes and surprises all to help eliminate a child’s pain from injury, disease deformity or musculoskeletal disorder. Funds raised assist local children as well as help the poor children at the Calexico clinic where the doctors fly down to treat children  regardless of their family’s financial circumstances.

ABWA holding Fall Membership Recruitment Event

 American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) is holding its fall membership recruitment event on Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Glendale Elk’s Lodge.

Juried Exhibition by Brand Library & Art Center

The Associates of Brand Library & Art Center is sponsoring its 41^st consecutive juried art exhibition “Works on Paper – Brand 41.” This exhibition deals with the theme “Memories” and features the works of 55 artists from various locales. The Associates’ Jane Friend Purchase Award and other awards will be presented during the opening reception on Friday, Oct. 5 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Burbank Creative Art Center. The exhibition is on view through Oct. 25.

The diverse exhibition’s continuity derives from the fact that all pieces are works on paper, although the definition has broadened through the years to include mixed media and three dimensional art works.

The annual national juried exhibitions have been organized and sponsored by the Associates of Brand Library & Art Center since 1971. This is the first year the event is being held outside the Brand Library Art Gallery due to extensive renovation of the facility by the City of Glendale.

‘Beneath the Veil’ at The Doctors House

The Doctors House Museum presents “Beneath the Veil,” a special exhibit on mourning and death, on Oct. 27 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitors will take a self-guided tour revealing the customs, practices, superstitions, beliefs, and traditions of the Victorian era related to mourning and death. (Due the subject matter, the exhibit is not recommended for young children.) $5 donation per person is suggested.

GAA presents juried exhibit

The Glendale Art Association presents its signature, juried exhibition of paintings, photography and sculpture by dozens of artists in Glendale and neighboring cities at White’s Framing and Art Restoration Gallery in Montrose. The artists’ reception is on Sunday, Oct. 7 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is open to the public. American Association of University Women, Glendale Branch will host Dr. Christel J. AAUW hosts BLOC AND BLUE: MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT THE GENDER GAP in voting

Hans Johnson, political consultant and columnist, is the guest speaker at the Oct. 20 AAUW luncheon. Johnson will explore how women vote and why, and the oft-reported gender gap. Johnson, a Michigan native, earned a B.A. from the College of Wooster in Ohio.  As a political consultant, he provides expertise on database matching and voter contact strategies, state politics, and ballot measures to campaigns, organizations, and coalitions.  As a columnist, Johnson’s work appears at the Huffington Post and In These Times magazine.

Women’s Self Defense Class Coming to Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA is hosting a weekly self-defense class for women, from teens to adults. Self defense training gives women skills and confidence to protect herself by having the tools to prevent or stop an attack from an assailant. Instructor Steve Dunning is a black belt instructor in northern style Shaolin kung fu. He has studied judo and kung fu in the U.S. and China.

Participants will practice with partners to experience realistic scenarios, focus on mental control and develop an awareness of surroundings. The class will begin on Oct. 22 and continue Monday nights from 7 p.m. to 8:15p.m. There is a fee for this class and registration is required.

Smart Gardening Workshop

On Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to noon, the Crescenta Valley Water District will present the Smart Gardening Workshop offered through Water Wise Consulting. The class will be held at the District’s Glenwood Plant.

Di Fusco in ‘the Long Way Home’

Montrose resident John DiFusco will be opening his new solo show on Nov. 3.  “The Long Way Home” is a personal and poetic look back at the conception, creation, and theatrical journey of the landmark Vietnam play, “Tracers.” “The Long Way Home – Reflections on the Tracers Journey” is a personal and poetic look back at the “Tracers” experience. DeFusco tells the story with poetry, projections, story telling, and live music.  Musician Al Keith accompanies on percussion and vocals providing a live sound track.

Tomaso at Starlight Books

Pasadena-based author Carla Tomaso will read from her new novel “Frozen,” a quirky tale involving eerie cryonics, dark twists and a maternal bond like no other. “Frozen” is Tomaso’s fifth book and focuses on one woman’s journey to wholeness after she reanimates her cryonically frozen mother who comes back as a child.  The narrator tries to raise her to be the mother she deserves. Tomaso began writing the novel to help work through her mother’s narcissism and her own anger.

Coffee Gallery in Altadena hosts a variety of events every week.

Tuesdays are “Comedy Open Mic” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. All comics get to do a five-minute set. Performers range from those performing for the first time to seasoned professionals. Hosted by Scott Berger.

Sierra Club Plans China Trip

The community is invited to a well-paced journey to China. Explore Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, where the Emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties lived. Climb the Great Wall, take a boat cruise on the Grand Canal of Hangzhou, and visit Suzhou’s Silk factory. Set sail on the Yangtze River, enjoy the wonderful scene of deep and quiet gorges, and the magnificent peaks as if they were cut by axes and knives. CVHS CHORAL ALUMS WANTED

Former members of choral groups at Crescenta Valley High School are invited to take part in the CVHS Alumni Choral. The group, composed of CVHS choral alumni men and women, rehearse once a week on Wednesdays from 7:15 p.m. – 9:15 p.m., at the Glendale First United Methodist Church. The group performs for local civic groups and retirement homes in Pasadena, Glendale, La Crescenta, Montrose and Duarte during the holiday season and again in the late spring/early summer. After the holiday season performances the group will resume rehearsals in the middle of January.
