Big Lottery Winners in La Crescenta

The Crescenta Valley is now home to some big lottery winners.

A SuperLotto-winning ticket worth $7 million was turned in Oct. 3 at Verdugo Liquor, at the corner of Honolulu Avenue and Verdugo Boulevard.

Store owner Troy Drad said that the winners are 14 teachers who bought a $40 ticket last month. Drad said one of the teachers, a woman, came in and scanned the ticket and when it said it was jackpot winner, she asked the clerk – who was not Drad – what that meant.

What it means is that, after taxes, each teacher will receive around $250,000, Drad said. He did not know what school the teachers are from.

The numbers for the SuperLotto Plus ticket were 12, 13, 8, 36, 29 and the Mega number 10.

Drad said his store would get about $22,000 for selling the ticket, but that estimate is low, according the California Lottery website.

“Verdugo Liquor will receive a bonus of one half percent, or $35,000, for selling the winning ticket,” the site said. “Jackpot winners have 180 days from the date of the draw to claim the jackpot prize.”

Verdugo Liquor has previously sold winning Fantasy 5 and scratcher tickets of $65,000 and $100,000, said Drad.

“Everybody looks for the winning ticket, yeah,” he said.
