All Gladiators teams except the Midgets played Saturday at Glendale High School against the Glendale Bears. The Midgets played Sunday at Temple City High School against the Arcadia Indians.

On Saturday afternoon, the Gremlin Division for the La Cañada Gladiators controlled all facets of the game in their 25-2 victory over the Bears at Glendale High School. The Gladiators are now 3-1 and in second place in the Arroyo League, one game behind the Pasadena Panthers.

The Gladiators running backs made all the difference in the game Saturday. Daylon Beasley led all Gladiator backs with over 100 yards for the second week in a row. Thanks to the great blocking from the offensive line, led by Joe Kazarian, Charlie Stewart, Aaron Garcia, Christopher Marfisi, Efrem Rivera, Adam Griffin, Jonah Cisneros, CJ Corlett, and Matthew Watson, the Gladiators controlled the line of scrimmage. Hard running fullback Chase Center also had a great game pounding the Glendale defense. Tightends Jake Fitzgerald, Brandon Shepherd, Marcus Martin and Marcus Powe were not to be outdone and came up with big block after big block.

Center put the Gladiators on the board in the first quarter when he took an inside handoff for a 38 yard touchdown run. The first quarter ended with the Gladiators up 6-0.

In the second quarter, Lucas Lenhoff took the reins at quarterback for the Gladiators and found Mycah Pasten for a 12 yard completion that put the Gladiators inside the Bear 10 yard line. Chase Center took the next handoff from Lenhoff into the end zone, making the score 12-0 at halftime.

The Gladiators came out in the 2^nd half, and opened up their finesse running game. Daylon Beasley took a handoff and sprinted 48 yards untouched for the Gladiators third score, putting the Gladiators up 18-0.  Later in the half, with the Gladiators facing a fourth down and 8 yards to go, Beasley dashed for 16 yards to keep the drive alive. Beasley finished the drive with a 32 yard touchdown run.  Matthew Watson barreled his way into the end zone for the conversion to put the Gladiators up 25-0. Louie De La Cruz saw his first handoffs of the season as he also carried the ball for the Gladiators.

Wide receivers, Mycah Pasten, Caden Owen, Laelan Wright, Jacob Nies, Dexter Matthews, Caden Smith, Matty Lopez, Matthew Ruf, Jacob Nies, Kane Austen and Carson Center laid down awesome downfield blocks that helped spring the Gladiators running game.

The Gladiators defense once again dominated and kept the Bears out of the end zone all day.Four Gladiators, Powe, Chase Center, Watson and Christopher Marfisi all came away with fumble recoveries. Marfisi’s fumble recovery at the Gladiator 6 yard-line, was key in stopping a Glendale scoring threat. Linebackers Joe Kazarian and Colby Rees made stop after stop, shutting down the Bears offense. The defensive line led by Powe, Watson, Jonah Cisneros, Jake Fitzgerald, Brandon Shepherd, Marfisi, Dylan Luper, CJ Corlett, Lucas Ponce, Matty Lopez, Charlie Stewart, and Aaron Garcia played hard all day and kept the Glendale offense off-balance.

The Gladiator defensive backs also had a great game as well. Patrick Weinmann, Beasley, Andrew Sharman, Smith, and De La Cruz blanketed the Bear receivers, and Sharman accounted for the fifth Gladiator turnover with an interception returned for 30 yards.

Next week, the Gladiators look to continue their winning ways as they host the Alhambra Thunderbirds on Sunday, October 14^th, at 9:00 a.m. at La Canada High School.

Junior Pee Wee

LA CANADA 0, Glendale Bears 40

On Saturday morning, the La Canada Jr Pee Wee’s took on their cross town rivals, the Glendale Bears, at Glendale High School, and came up short 40-6

.

The defensive line led by Armand Mkrtchyan, Kilian Trulick, Jarid Ramos, Anthony Lopez, Ryan Kim, Triston Kekahuna and Austin Heberger with the help of inside linebacker, Talent Finn, Valentin Nunez and Maceo Della Catena controlled the line of scrimmage. Without a strong running game, the Gladiators forced the Bears to turn to air.

The defensive backs faced their first passing team of the season. The defensive backs, led by Milad Lashgari, Anthony Vasquez, Michael Ruf, Devin Matthews, Johnny Vasily and Mitchell Frus fought hard to keep the Bears out of the end zone.

Clayton Byer had another strong performance at quarterback for the Gladiators. Maceo Della Catena did all he could to build on his success from the previous game. Della Catena and Johnny Vasily fought hard for yards as the Gladiators tried to establish the running game.

The offensive line led by Christopher Nava, Jarid Ramos, Armand Mkrtchyan, Kilian Trulick, Triston Kekahuna, Wiley Roberts, Mitchell Frus, Valentin Nunez and Daniel Castaneda had another strong performance.

Wide receiver’s Jonathan Tejada, Andres Ramirez, Austin Heberger, Michael Ruf had good down field blocks and did all they could to find openings in the defense.

The Gladiator Junior Pee Wees next host the Alhambra Thunderbirds at La Canada High School at noon on Sunday, October 14^th.

La Canada 37 Glendale Bears 12

Continuing in their winning ways the La Canada Gladiator Pee Wees improved to 2-2 this Saturday at Glendale High School with a convincing 37-12 victory over the Glendale Bears.

The Gladiator scoring was led by quarterback Greg Dulcich with 144 yards running and 2 touchdowns, Mitchell Espinosa with 2 running touchdowns, Elijah Washington with 65 yards rushing and 1 touchdown and kicker Chris Wood hit 6 extra points. Artis Candler added another 34 yards rushing.

The Gladiator front offensive line which opened up the holes that sprung the five runners for the total yardage of 257 yards was Chris Simonian, Marcelino Martinez, Jacob Buntich, Clayton Esparza, Aaron Wilson, Justin Morris, Derek Albanese and Manuel Lopez-Torres.

Players on the Gladiator defense the stopped the Bears were Anthony Alvarado, Carson Okland, Will Stewart, Evan Estrada, Jason Watson, Colman Trulik and Ryan Beegle. One defensive highlight was two Bear pass interceptions by Chris Wood including a 28 yd runback of one of those interceptions.

Next week the Gladiators will host the Alhambra Thunderbirds at La Canada High School on Sunday afternoon, October 14^th, at 2:00 p.m.

Jr. Midgets

La Canada 16 Glendale Bears 7

The La Canada Gladiator Jr. Midget squad took the field on Saturday under the lights at Glendale High for their first night game of the season and they seized the opportunity to put on a show for their fans, defeating the Bears 16-7 and improving to 2-1-1 on the season.

The Gladiator offense got off to a slow start. They launched their rushing game and despite good runs by Drake Barron and Michael Chan, the Gladiators were ultimately forced to punt it to the Bears’ 15-yard line.   The Bears moved downfield and scored on a 85 yard drive to lead 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Undeterred, the Gladiators ultimately unleashed a coordinated running and passing attack and took control of the game. The offensive line of Brandt Lukas, Peter Simmeth, Chase Sanford, Gavin Chi, Theo Chamberlain, and Zach Kejmar gave the Gladiators the ability to rush for their first touchdown of the game. The talents of Tyler Hill, Chan and Barron were repeatedly showcased and Richie Schroeder also added yards to the effort. Chan brought the Gladiators in for the touchdown as well as the two point conversion, giving the Gladiators the edge 8-7.

The Gladiators further displayed their command of the field with a solid defensive line consisting of Michael Doud, Brian Erickson, Kejmar, Chamberlain, Hugo Wallington, Justin Sabourin, Jackson Totleben, and Daniel Diaz. Defensive back Bobby Gazmarian showed that he came to play football with a dominant tackle; and strong key tackles were also made by Barron, Gavin Campbell, Hill, and Erickson halting the progress of the Bears running game and allowing the Gladiators to take possession.
The next Gladiator possession featured several powerful runs by Barron and a successful 22-yard pass by quarterback Gabriel Mathews to Erickson, further showcasing the vast array of talent on the Gladiator team. Despite the offensive momentum of the Gladiators, however, the score remained 8-7 at the half.

The Gladiators continued dominating on defense with Neil Lenhoff, Barron, Chan, Jack Kazarian, Doud, Jack Rappard, Riley Center, Jake Schaeffer, Diaz, and Chi in the third quarter. The pressure was effective and led to a Bears fumble with Wallington recovering, firing up the Gladiator fans.

Chan and Hill then led the rushing game for the Gladiators’ offense. Key blocks by split ends Kyle Ramirez, Erickson, Gazmarian, and Maxx Moreno helped clear the way for a final Hill touchdown as well as the 2-point conversion.

The Bears’ offensive efforts were thwarted throughout the fourth quarter by the Gladiators’ defensive line, including a key stop by Brown, a fumble causing tackle by Totleben, and a fumble recovery by Schroeder. The defensive cover skills of Gazmarian, Barron and Mathews shut down their passing game on the next Bear possession, capturing the win for the Gladiators with a final score of 16 to 7.

The Gladiator Jr. Midgets are eagerly preparing to take on the Alhambra Thunderbirds at La Canada High School this Sunday, October 14^th, at 4:00 pm.

La Canada 48 Arcadia Indians 0

The La Canada Gladiator Midgets squad soundly defeated the Arcadia Indians 48-0 on Sunday afternoon at Temple City High School.  Due to the significant scoring difference, the game was stopped by the referee mid-way into the third quarter.  The Gladiators are now 4-0 on the season and in a three-way tie for first place alongside the East Los Angeles Bobcats and the El Sereno Stallions in the Del Rey League.

Offensively, the Gladiators have scored 187 points this year, while the stubborn defense has held all four of the Gladiator’s opponents scoreless. This trend continued on Sunday as the Gladiator ground attack was varied and effective.  Angel Salazar led all backs with 93 yards and 3 touchdowns; Maxx Jakeway had with 79 yards and a score; Drake Beasley rushed for 53 yards and 2 touchdowns; David “Big D” Vardanian had 46 yards on three carries and 1 touchdown; Jasher Foster rushed for 33 yards and 1 touchdown; Dominic Jones ran for 24 yards, William Rees rushed for 15 yards; and Lucas Lorea had 6 points in three rushing extra points after touchdowns. The impressive array totaled 345 yards rushing in less than three full quarters of football. Gladiators on the front line for the offense opening huge holes in the Arcadia defense were Charles Weinmann, Matthew Bazarevitsch, Samuel Martinez, Anthony Barales, Jesse Blackwell, Vincent Ary, Steven Isip, Brandon Cook and David Frost.

On defense, Angel Salazar had an interception of an Indian pass for a run back of 40 yards. Both Johnny Padilla and Drake Beasley also caught interceptions from the Arcadia quarterback. Meanwhile the Gladiator defense players of Isaiah Guardado, David de La Cruz, Johnny Padilla, Sam Martinez, and Hunter Burnett held the Arcadia Indians to only 16 yards of total offense.

Next week the Gladiators will take on the Charter Oak Chargers on Sunday, October 14, at 5:00 p.m. at Charter Oak High School.
