Krekorian wants to move to L.A. council

A special election next week in the Sunland-Tujunga area of Los Angeles could have a considerable effect on the local political scene.

Paul Krekorian, who represents Glendale in the 43rd Assembly District, is trying to win the 2nd Council District seat vacated by Wendy Gruel.

If Krekorian is elected Tuesday, a special election will be needed to fill out his remaining term in the Assembly, with a number of local leaders considered possible candidates.

Kerkorian ran first in the special election in September and faces film executive Christine Essel in the runoff. Krekorian topped Essel by about a thousand votes, with six other candidates in the race.

The future of the Southern California film industry has been a major issue in the runoff, along with reforms in city government and budget concerns. Both candidates have been blasted as carpetbaggers for moving into the district to run.

If there is a special election in Krekorian’s 43rd district, candidates would have to run for a new term a few months later in June.

Senior meal
program continues

Seniors and shut-ins will continue to be offered lunches under the city of Glendale’s hot lunch program, under a contract approved by the City Council Tuesday.

The hot meals are served at Sparr Heights Center and the Adult Recreation Center. Nearly 40,000 meals are served annually at the two centers and another 11,550 are home delivered.

The contract was awarded to Morrison Management service. The price is $4 for meals served at the centers and $3 for home delivered meals.

The second bidder seeking the contract, Food Art Catering Services, proposed a rate of $12 for meals at the centers and $15 for home delivery.

The city has been providing the program since 1979 under the Older Americans Act. Grant award was $214,284 for 2009-10. The new contract will continue through 2012.

Clinic puts out a call for strollers

The Crisis Pregnancy Clinic in Glendale has a need of strollers for clients. The clinic is also seeking Christmas gifts for some of the children whose parents are out of work. Clothes, size 12 to 18 months, toys, books and shoes are especially in short supply.

LOCAL MEN NAMED TO COMMISSIONS

The Glendale City Council has approved the appointment of La Crescenta resident Mike Morgan to the Historic Preservation Commission.

Morgan, cofounder of Crescenta Valley Heritage, is vice president of the Montrose-Sparr Heights Association and is a member of the Historical Society of Crescenta Valley. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history. The council also approved a new term on the Transportation and Parking Commission for Bill Weissman, co-founder of the Far North Homeowners Association.
