On the afternoon of Oct. 23, the Crescenta-Cañada YMCA opened its doors to the new community lounge area called the Patio Room.

Situated adjacent to the kitchen area, the completion of the patio room was just one of many improvements the Y has made keeping in mind its members and the community.

“The beauty of it is just amazing. All of it flows together,” said Y Chief Financial Officer Elena Ksendzov who also pointed out that the glass door entrance to the patio room is “perfect” because regardless whether days are sunny or rainy, visitors can enjoy the openness.

For several weeks leading up to the unveiling, Y members have been enjoying coffee provided by the facility in an outdoor seating area. Now morning coffee can be enjoyed in comfortable chairs while sharing the company of others.

Moments before Y executive director Rosanne Malogolowkin cut the ceremonial red ribbon to welcome the community in, staff members were making last minutes adjustments, hanging photos and straightening seats.

“The purpose of the room is to have a permanent place [for visitors] to hang out while bringing the community together,” said Malogolowkin, adding that she cannot wait to see the space full of guests and staff.

With a $25,000 grant from the city of La Cañada, diligent contractors, the help of the staff and patient members, the addition took about three months to complete.

“It is still a work in progress,” said Lifestyles director Jim Neto. “We will be bringing in more wall treatments and more furniture.”

La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce members were present to support the event.

“The chamber promotes the YMCA. It is a very important part of the fabric of our community,” said LCF Chamber CEO Pat Anderson, whose own grandson participates on the Y’s swim team.

The patio room is also equipped with free Wi-Fi and a television set. The room will be open during the Y’s business hours.

Y member Elisa Rosen visits the facility with her family regularly and is excited about spending time with her family, other members and the staff.

“All of the staff are really good,” said Rosen. “This is a very nice area to hang out. We come almost every day as a family.”
