Thanksgiving is Almost Here?

We have our staff meetings on Monday morning when we plan out that week’s paper and talk about upcoming events that we want to schedule. This past Monday we were sitting at the table discussing November when someone asked if next week was going to be a short week due to Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving?

Already?!

Holy cow! How that snuck up on me I don’t know, but the calendar doesn’t lie and indeed next Thursday is Turkey Day.

The good news (to me) is that thus far there have been minimal Christmas advertisements on T.V. Those early ads really annoy me because it seems there’s no interest in celebrating a day of giving thanks, of acknowledging the trials that we’ve overcome throughout the year but instead urge us to spend, spend, SPEND our way through December. I would prefer to reflect on those things that build up my spirit, that remind me of how fortunate I am. But I’ll elaborate on those aspects of Thanksgiving next week.

Today, I would like to remind you that CV Weekly, along with other local businesses, are supporting the food drive for the La Cañada Flintridge Community Center. We have a collection bin outside our office here at 3800 La Crescenta Ave. #101 that has received donations already and someone even stopped by with a box of food! (That was awesome, by the way. I was feeling down that day and when I pulled into the parking lot and saw that box, my heart almost leapt out of my chest. To that wonderful person – thank you).

So, please take a minute and drop off some canned and boxed goods. The bin will be picked up on Monday morning, Nov. 19, so time is running out.

Remember, too, that the LCFCC collection kicks off a season of opportunity – the opportunity to give! There will be collection points around town for food and toys so, if you can, pick up something extra with the intention of donating.                    _________________

As many of you know, I am the president of Prom Plus at Crescenta Valley High School. This organization is approaching its 20th year giving prom attendees somewhere safe, but very fun, to go after prom. The event – which includes a casino, mechanical bull and even a zip line – costs in excess of $20,000 to host. We raise the money during the year through fundraisers and from the generosity of local residents and businesses. One of these businesses is the Clothing Market at 2260 Honolulu Ave. in Montrose.

The Clothing Market is having its second anniversary and to celebrate is having an open house and fashion show this Saturday. The event begins at 3 p.m. with the fashion show at 4 p.m. The models are customers of theirs and students from Crescenta Valley High School. Oh, yes – I almost forgot. I will be strutting my stuff along the catwalk as well.

Disclaimer: This was not my idea. Being the shrinking violet that I am (quit laughing), I was none too eager to be parading along the stage at the Clothing Market. However, it is for a good cause. So, please come out and support Prom Plus this Saturday at 4 o’clock by attending the celebration and fashion show at the Clothing Market. Plan to enjoy some food and drink and bring your checkbook – the clothes (which are designed by the store’s owners and manufactured in the U.S.) are beautiful, inexpensive and would be a welcome gift under the Christmas tree.
