Turpin at Penelope’s

Artist Peterfield Turpin has 35 watercolor paintings on display at Penelope’s Cafe – Books – Gallery in La Cañada Flintridge through February.

Turpin attended Dublin School, Choate School and Rhode Island School of Design where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in illustration. An accomplished commercial artist on both the east and west coasts, Turpin belongs to the Verdugo Hills Art Association, Businessmen’s Art Institute and the Glendale Art Association.

Since leaving the commercial art world, he has devoted himself to painting in both watercolor and oil.

Deke and Blazers to Perform

Local doo-wop group Deke and the Blazers is performing on Saturday, Jan. 12 at Joe’s Great American Bar & Grill, 4311 W. Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be an open mic session for anyone who would like to perform. Guys and gals can show up, find other singers, go outside to rehearse together and if they like it, they bring it inside and sing onstage.

The cost is $10 cover plus $10 table minimum. Food costs range from $10-$18.

VHHa to host Manning

Verdugo Hills Art Association hosts guest artist Shirley Manning for a demonstration event on Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. at the La Cañada Community Center.

Manning will be demonstrating in watercolor. She recently won the Yoko Cohen Watercolor Award at the 87th Annual Exhibition of the Pasadena Society of Artists and her piece, Marina, was selected for the 2012 Watercolor West Exhibition.

SEASON’S FIRST CAMELLIA SHOW AT DESCANSO GARDENS

The Pacific Camellia Society kicks off the new camellia season with its annual show in Van de Kamp Hall in Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12-13. Drawing the best camellia growers and hobbyists from all over Southern California, the popular show usually fills up the hall with wall-to-wall camellia blossoms.

There will be a special category open to only those who have never entered a blossom and won an award. Winners in this category are entitled to the same quality crystal awards given to winners in other categories. Anyone wishing to enter blossoms in this special category should be at the gardens before 9 a.m. on Saturday, at which time seasoned competitors will be available to assist.

Show hours are from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Entrance to the show is free with garden admission.

On Sunday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m., Smoky Zeidel signs her book, “The Storyteller’s Bracelet,” a novel dealing with the mandatory Indian schools created by the U.S. government in the 1800s.  In addition to the provocative subject matter, this book is also available on Flintridge Bookstore’s Espresso Book Machine, which provides self-publishing and on demand book services in-house.  Zeidel’s title is one of several million available to print on demand – quality paperback books printed in about 15 minutes.

Little Landers Presents History of Knott’s Berry Farm

Little Landers Historical Society presents the history of Knott’s Berry Farm on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m.

In 1920, there was a 20-acre farm owned by the Knott Family. With the success of the boysenberry, the family expanded the farm to include a tea room and then a restaurant serving tasty fried chicken dinners. It is so much more than the theme park people know today.

Urban anthropologist Eric Lynxwiler, co-author of the book “Knott’s Preserved: From Boysenberry to Theme Park, the History of Knott’s Berry Farm,” is the guest speaker. Lynxwiler is also the host of “Neon Cruise” for the Museum of Neon Art as well as a docent for the Los Angeles Conservancy.  He even worked behind the counter of the shooting gallery at Knott’s Berry Farm while in college.

KIEFER GUEST SPEAKER AT NEXT AAUW GLENDALE MEETING

AAUW Glendale hosts Dr. Jill Kiefer, a professor of art history in the Graduate Humanities program at Mt. Saint Mary’s, talking on fine arts and art history and  the rewarding experience of working in this field. Also featured will be a silent auction of homemade items and gift cards to benefit the AAUW program Tech Trek – summer camp for girls interested in science and technology.

Opera and the Silver Screen at Glendale Library

On Saturday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m., the Glendale Public Library will be hosting a talk titled “Opera and the Silver Screen.” The talk will be given by Los Angeles Opera Speakers’ Bureau member Larry Verdugo. He will speak on the relationship been film and opera and show film excerpts from 1915 to the present.

Admission is free.

This talk is rescheduled from November 2012.

NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC

Glendale Noon Concerts is a free admission concert series taking place every first and third Wednesday from 12:10-12:40 p.m. in the restored chapel and sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Glendale (downtown at Louise & Wilson, no religious affiliation).

The next concert is on Jan. 16 and features Calico Winds that will perform works by Bizet and Janacek.

Workshop to help parents of college bound seniors

 A free workshop is being held at the Glendale YMCA on Jan. 17 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for local parents of college bound high school students.

The workshop will focus on little-known ways of getting money for college, no matter how much income is made, or the student’s grades. The class will include topics such as how to double or triple eligibility for free grant money, the secret to sending a child to a private or UC school for less than the cost of a junior college, and the single biggest mistake that nine out of 10 parents make when planning for college.

Y holding courses for seniors

On Jan. 18, the Parkinson’s disease support group  will discuss “Understanding and Managing Pain in Parkinson’s Disease.” The group meets at Light on the Corner Church in Montrose. The group is sponsored by the SoCal Movement Disorder Society and the Crescenta Cañada YMCA. The group is free and open to all.

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA is also hosting a four-week memory training course at Light on the Corner Church in Montrose. The purpose is to teach memory training strategies in an effort to improve memory in older adults with normal, age-related memory challenges. The group course is not intended for people with dementia.

The program is offered weekly on Wednesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. starting on Jan. 23. The fee is $50 and registration is now open at the membership office at the Y.

Sandoval to perform at Alex

The legendary Arturo Sandoval brings his big band to the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale for a one night only performance to Save The Music.  The performance is on Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. at the Alex Theatre.

The Glendale Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Business Outlook Breakfast on Jan. 24 from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Dr. Robert Kleinhenz, chief economist of the Kyser Center for Economic Research of the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, which conducts research on the regional, state and national economies, will be speaking. Dr. Kleinhenz will provide an update on Glendale and the region.

Coffee Gallery in Altadena hosts a variety of events every week.

Tuesdays are “Comedy Open Mic” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. All comics get to do a five-minute set. Performers range from those performing for the first time to seasoned professionals. Hosted by Scott Berger.

Thursday is “Artisan Alley” from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Artisan Alley includes two featured musical acts, two musical open mics (open to anyone in the community), the works of a featured artist in the back room (art changes every two weeks), and a live DJ. Hosted by The Definition.

Friday is “Music Open Mic” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Music open mic allows anyone in the community to come on stage and sing a song or play a tune. The sign-up sheet stays open throughout the night and everyone gets to perform twice. Rotating hosts.

FREE INCOME TAX PREPARATION

Beginning Feb. 1, residents can receive free income tax preparation under the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program provided through AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, a tax-exempt charity of AARP.  Membership in AARP is not required.

Free income tax preparation can be obtained at La Crescenta County Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd. (corner of La Crescenta Avenue) from Friday, Feb. 1 through Friday, April 12 except for April 5.  Enter from the upper level parking lot.

The hours are Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Taxpayers will be helped on a “first-come-first-served” basis; no advanced reservations are available.

Lcwc hosts La Crescenta ‘Antique Road Show’

The La Crescenta Woman’s Club is hosting Antiques & Collectibles Event featuring Jackie Fimbres of Crown City Antiques in  Montrose on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the LCWC clubhouse.  Fimbres will appraise “treasures” brought by the public. There will be a charge of $5 for each item appraised with a five-item limit. This event is open to the public and anyone may rent a table for $50 to display and sell their own collectables. Vendors are not required to pay any commission or percentage fee on sold items.  Only items that are categorized as antiques or collectables will be permitted for sale by vendors.

Those hungry or thirsty will have free coffee and tea available. hot dogs, chips and a soda can be purchased for $4.50.

The Glendale Educational Foundation is hosting its annual Dancing With Diamonds gala on Friday, Feb. 8 at the Glendale Hilton. ABWA HOLDING ANNUAL THE HEART OF BUSINESS EXPO

The ABWA Verdguo-Glen chapter presents the 2nd Annual The Heart of Business Expo on Feb. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be a special appearance by Glendale City Councilmember Laura Friedman with keynote speaker Dr. Yasmin Davidds. Dr. Davidds is an international best‐selling author, women empowerment specialist, television talk show host, radio personality and self‐help guru in both English and Spanish markets within theU.S. and Latin America.

The keynote topic is Take Back Your Power and will cover the power each has in their life and how to decide to use that power.

La Crescenta Homesteader’s Artwork on Exhibit

Sketches and watercolors from 1900 – 1902 by Winifred Bathey, a La Crescenta homesteader who also pursued art, are on display at the Lanterman House until Feb. 28. The exhibition of this private collection also includes photographs from the Bathey family albums. Winifred, the eldest daughter, focused on architecture and landscape in her artwork, preserving a rare glimpse of the foothills and parts of Los Angeles at the turn of the 20th Century.

Almost lost from the Bathey estate, the artwork was fortuitously reunited with the homestead’s current owner when a Los Angeles book collector happened upon them at the bottom of several boxes of books. Sketches and watercolors have been framed by White’s Gallery to preserve them. The homestead remains in good condition on privately owned land.

Sierra Club Plans China Trip

The community is invited to a well-paced journey to China. Explore Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, where the Emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties lived. Climb the Great Wall, take a boat cruise on the Grand Canal of Hangzhou, and visit Suzhou’s Silk factory. Set sail on the Yangtze River, enjoy the wonderful scene of deep and quiet gorges, and the magnificent peaks as if they were cut by axes and knives. Take a shore excursion to the Shennong Stream where you may see the ancient roads, coffins in precipice, and even some rare animals such as golden-haired monkeys.  We will also visit Xi’an’s most important archeological site, where thousands of life-size terra-cotta warriors have been guarding the Emperor’s burial site for over 2,000 years.  Discover the mile-long riverside embankment where foreign investors once held sway over Shanghai.

FIRST CVHS CLASS OF ’63 PLANS 50-YEAR REUNION

A 50-year reunion is being planned by the members of the first class to graduate from Crescenta Valley High in 1963.

The “First and the Best” will celebrate June 22-23, 2013 at Angeles National Golf Club nestled at the base of the Angeles National Forest just 15 minutes from Burbank Airport and numerous hotels.

Plans include a Saturday night “Buffet of Memories: An Evening with Old Friends, Fine Food & Good Spirits,” and a Sunday brunch.

Area residents might remember when the “old” Clark Junior High campus was converted into a high school in the fall of 1960, and there was only a sophomore class.  Those students were the first to graduate from the new high school, and they established the school mascot, school colors, school song (written by class faculty advisor Shirley Nute) and many other traditions.
