Alan Eugene Allmon

Jan. 4, 1938 – Jan. 5, 2013

Alan was born on Jan. 4, 1938 in Glendale; he passed away on Jan. 5 at home during his sleep. He was the eldest of two sons born to L. Zell and A. Marie Allmon.

Alan is survived by his three sons Chris, David and Greg; two daughters-in-law Jordan and Beth; two grandsons Damion and Corey; three granddaughters Briana, Storm-Marie and Skylar; brother Roy, sister-in-law Kathy; foster sister-in-law Joyce; and many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Zell, his loving mother Marie, his adoring second wife Betty Piana-Allmon, and his grandson Daniel Ryan Allmon.

Alan graduated from Eagle Rock High School in 1956. While attending Eagle Rock, he developed an interest in cars while working for his father in the family machine shop as well as at a local gas station. He has had many cars over his life including a 1931 Ford Model A 4-door, a 1947 Ford 2-door with a flathead V8, and a 1955 Chevy Bel Air.

Alan went to work for the L.A. Times as a machinist right out of high school and remained a loyal worker for over 40 years until his retirement. Over the years he had a couple of small businesses of his own, “A Small Print Shop” (business cards and business flyers) in Montrose, and an “Office Cleaning Service” (cleaned the L.A. Times building in Van Nuys).

In 1957, he joined the California National Guard and served his country for eight years.

Over the years, he was involved in both snow and water skiing, skydiving (was a charter member of the L.A. Skydivers Club), and off-road racing (Class 1, single seat) with California Off-Road Racing Enthusiast Club (CORE) of Montrose.

He was a big supporter of and had many friends in American Legion Posts 288, 377, and VFW Post 1614.

Alan was a loving father and a great role model. He was loved so deeply by his children that two of them have even followed in his footsteps. His eldest son Chris is a retired military member with over 30 years in the U.S. Navy. His second son, David has been working at the L.A. Times for over 20 years, and his third son Greg has the same loving spirit as his dad.

Alan will be sorely missed by his family; he will also be missed by the many friends he met along his life journey.
