Lloyd’s Wheel & Brake Services has closed its doors after more than 50 years of servicing the foothills area. Lloyd Moore, the owner and namesake, recently decided to close the shop he’d owned “from 1959 to the 9th of this past November.”

After working as an auto technician at Howard Buick in Hollywood, Moore served in Korea for three years. Upon returning home, Moore worked from 1954 to 1957 on the spot that eventually became Lloyd’s at 3445 Foothill Blvd., then called Castoe Auto Service. In 1959, Moore bought the business and the rest is history, 50  plus years of auto work which gained the shop a reputation for prompt, quality service.

“It was wonderful,” said Moore, speaking of his time at Lloyd’s. “I enjoyed being a servant of the public.”

But Moore noted, “It was time to do something else.”

But while he was ready to move on, Moore does regret the impact the closure will have on his employees, citing the economy as one of the main factors for Lloyd’s closure.

“I hate to quit more for the employees and the technicians who have done so much for me,” he said. “But I know they’re very good at what they do and will find something.”

Moore described the next stage of his life as “semi-retirement” and spoke of a ranch in Sunland with myriad of “horses, chickens and dogs” to tend to.

In place of Lloyd’s will be an American Tire Depot, set to open in the near future.
