Was one of your New Year’s resolutions to take some time for yourself and do something creative? There’s something about knitting, crocheting and needlework that brings a feeling of peace and satisfaction that comes with the joy of crafting something unique and handmade. As the world seems to spin faster and faster, it’s all the more important to carve out some time, pour a cup of tea and learn a skill that has been passed down to women over generations. With all of the change around us, it’s nice to appreciate a business that has been steady and excelling at what they do for a long time. Did you know Needle in a Haystack will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in June?  Jody has owned the business for nearly 13 years after working for the previous owner. Her background is in design, so she loves working with colors and threads. Her special loves are needlepoint and cross-stitch, which she has been doing for many years.

For those who don’t know, Needle in a Haystack (2262 Honolulu Ave.) is a full service needlework store. They carry supplies for knitting, needlepoint, cross-stitch, crochet and embroidery. They also offer formal classes in knitting and needlepoint, from beginner to advanced. In addition, they do pillow, ornament, and stocking finishing and framing.

This year they are offering a “New to Knitting” class every other Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. starting Jan. 26. Yes, that’s this Saturday! You can join at any time and be a complete newcomer, know the basics, or be ready to start your first real project. Isn’t that exciting!? Drop-in knitting classes are on Tuesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 1p.m. Needlepoint classes are on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

NIAH also has a very experienced staff that is friendly and fun and ready to teach and help you. Jan is the resident knitting teacher and can guide you through even the most difficult project. Her beautiful samples are everywhere in the store. She also has a knit-a-long on Sundays. Cathy teaches needlepoint and is an expert at picking threads and stitches. She would love to help you embellish your canvas. You may also meet Lois (knitting, crochet, needlepoint and cross-stitch), Laraine (knitting and cross-stitch), Jeanie (knitting, and needlepoint) and Cheryl (embroidery, knitting).

To celebrate Montrose’s centennial at the end of February, Needle In A Haystack will be having a showcase of their customers’ best creations in needlepoint, cross-stitch, knitting and crochet. They also have the latest knitting book by Stephen West and Jan has already made a shawl from it.
