Make an Informed Choice When Going to the Polls

Voting is less than two months away here in Montrose, Verdugo City and the City of Glendale incorporated part of La Crescenta. It’s time to meet your candidates, read up on the special ballot measures and be prepared to make an informed choice. So many times I have gone to cast my ballot to fill political seats or vote on bonds and measures and I have no idea who to vote for! I usually just randomly pick names with limited information on who I am voting for or I simply do not vote at all. What a shame to have the right to vote and give that right away.

This might seem like a small decision or very inconsequential, but that is not true. We will have the opportunity to vote fill three of the five Glendale City Councilmember positions. These new members will make up the majority of the board and will potentially have the power to influence the entire direction of the board. With 12 people running and only three positions to fill, it is important you know where each candidate stands. The Glendale City Council generally functions as a congressional-style legislative body, proposing bills, holding votes, and passing laws to help govern the city. These councilmembers make very important decisions in our community and have the power to help us with the issues that affect our city! This is your chance to help elect candidates who will make decisions on your behalf. Traffic issues, police safety, building codes and permits, emergency management – and the list goes on.

That is why the Montrose Verdugo-City Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Glendale City Council candidates’ forum on Monday, March 11 at 7 p.m. at Sparr Heights Community Center. We are inviting all 13 city council candidates up here right in our own backyard to ask them the questions that we need the answers to. When you vote you will also have the opportunity to cast votes for a new treasurer, city clerk, three members of the Glendale Unified School District governing board and three members of the Glendale Community College board of trustees. Along with these offices, a number of ballot measures will be proposed for the voters’ consideration.

When you head to the polls on April 2, make sure you make an informed decision. A website to help you with that is Glendalevotes.org. The City of Glendale maintains the site and there you will find all the information you need. You can find your voting location, meet all the candidates and learn about the special ballot message.
