Robert Haw, who has been employed at JPL for 25 years as a systems engineer on exploration missions spanning the solar system from Mercury to Pluto, addressed members of the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada recently with his informative talk and slide show regarding the environment and the changes that have taken place over past century.

He explained how man has impacted the climate changes due to the introduction and use of coal. His subtitle was, “Canaries in the Coal Mine.” Haw said that the use of coal throughout the world has created the huge change in storms and the havoc wrecked by them and what can happen in the future if measures are not taken to correct the problems that are man-made.     Dr. Haw is the founder of the Climate Change Symposium at JPL with an annual public outreach event to educate the public on climate disruption. In 2011, he initiated the Pasadena Beyond Coal Campaign to help Pasadena reduce its carbon footprint. He strongly recommended that people become advocates to make these changes.

The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada meets Wednesdays for lunch at Descanso Gardens at 11:45 a.m. Members of the public are welcomed to attend as guests. Lunch is $15.
