CV girls got off to a strong start on their home turf against rival powerhouse Canyon High School on Saturday. Though non-league contests are non-scoring for league title, they give coaches the chance to evaluate athletes, testing them with different performance options.
“I am pleased with our first meet,” said CVHS coach Mark Evans. “It has been a while since we got a win against Canyon. We won the girls varsity and the boys frosh-soph.”
CV junior Nick Beatty, always a strong contender for the 1600m, ran an excellent 800m (2:02.3), winning that as well as capturing third in the 3200 (10:38.3) and running in a strong leg in the 1600 relay.
Junior Gabe Collison achieved his personal record (pr) in both the 1600 and 800, though he did not score.
“His fitness is great and he will run well,” said Evans of Collison’s performance, adding, “Senior David Shahmanyan ran well in the hurdles, second 110HH (16.3) and first in 300LH (41.5). The 1600 relay had one of our better early season times for that event (3:36) [with a team] composed of Alex Damla, Nick Beatty, Matthew Manalo, David Shahmanyan. Jumpers and throwers are ahead of where they were last year at this time.”
Returning league winner Kayleigh Carrillo, a junior, ran well winning the 400 (58.7) and 200 (25.4) and anchoring the win in the 1600 relay along with Megan Melnyk, Erica Johnson, and Emmie Walker (4:11.8). Sophomore Walker started the season in the high jump where she ended last year (5’2”) and ran a leg in both the 400 relay placing first (team of Wong, Carrillo, Walker, Keller) (50.6). Walker also took second in the 200m (26.9).
“Those were very good early season times,” said Evans. “The girls distance runners looked very good. I thought Haley Witzeman ran an especially good race in 3200 (12:12.4). That was a pr for her. Emily Beglarian jumped well. She is out after basketball season so she just needs to get in a little more work.”
Lindsey Jakeman’s first meet contributed to the girls win over Canyon. She placed second in the 100HH (18.1), first in the 300LH (50.3) and in the long jump (14-02), first in the triple jump (29-10).
Sarah Lapides took first in the 100HH (18.1) and second in the 300LH (51.2). Melnyk took first in the 800m race (2:25.1) with teammate Johnson taking second (2:27.5) and running the 1600m taking second as well (5:31.4).
Today, CV hosts another non-league meet against Golden Valley at 3:15 p.m.
