The Crescenta Valley Falcons boys’ tennis took a tough loss on Tuesday against Burroughs High School, losing 13-5.

Coming into the match, the Falcons were confident, looking to add another win as they had beaten Pasadena in their previous match, 18-0.

But they had a herculean challenge ahead of them as Burroughs had a perfect record thus far into the season, having beaten Hoover, Pasadena and Glendale. The Falcons fared no better, falling to the Indians in the singles column, 9-0.

“[In] singles, they are far better than us,” affirmed Falcons Coach Sam Hyun.  “I didn’t expect much.”

The Indians used their physical advantage with their talent to dominate their opponents.

Albert Chtchyan, the No. 1 seed for the Falcons, was the only player to put up a fight. He lost the first two matches, and fought particularly hard in the his third match, but eventually fell 4-6 to Sawyer Patterson, Burroughs’ No. 3 player.

The Indians No. 1 seed, Garret Appoux, was a dominant presence. He didn’t lose a single game in his three matches. Burroughs’ worst performer, Patterson, had lost only four games in his three matches combined.

As they did against Hoover last week, the Falcons mounted a comeback in doubles.

“We [won] five out of nine, it was a very good performance,” said Hyun.

Aren Abrahamian teamed up with Patrick Meserkhani. Abrahamian was filling in for Greg Manouchehri who was recovering from a foot injury.

The duo won two of their three matches. They beat the Indians’ second and third seeds, 6-3 and 6-3 respectively. Their winning streak came to a halt when they lost 6-1 to Kevin Hoang/Wen Yao Lin.

It was CV’s No. 2 duo of James Ho/Allen Chang that left a lasting impression.

They were down, 5-2, one game away from losing the match. Focused on the task ahead, they mounted an incredible comeback. They managed to win five games in a row to win the match against Shin/Hoang.

Ho said remaining calm was the key to their victory.

“I didn’t let myself get too angry,” said Ho, adding that they started to play with a sense of urgency.

Ho/Chang also won another match, 6-3 against Burroughs’ No. 2 seed Eduardo Ilano/Zach Maina before losing to Hoang/Lin, 6-1.

The No. 3 seed didn’t fare as well as their teammates. They won only one out of their three matches. The sole win came against Shin/Hoang, 6-0.

The Falcons won the doubles column, 5-4.

Going into their next match, the focus will undoubtedly be on doubles.

The Falcons next play Burbank today at 3:30 p.m.
