As I type this article I’m enjoying an unusually warm March morning. The high in my area is projected to be in the mid-80s – quite a turnaround from the bone-chilling cold that enveloped Southern California as recently as last week.

There is something about warm weather that has always struck me as particularly right for the music of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Their tendency to light, airy textures seem to parallel the desire to clothe oneself in similar like garb.

So it’s appropriate that Le Salon de Musiques, a chamber music group that holds monthly concerts at Downtown Los Angeles’ Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, should program those two composers for their Sunday afternoon concert on March 17.

Ravel’s “Piano Trio” – his last major work before he volunteered to serve in the French Army during World War I – and the late “Cello Sonata” and “Violin Sonata” of his colleague Debussy, from the same era, comprise the entirety of Le Salon’s program on Sunday.

Performing will be violinist Phillip Levy, cellist Andrew Shulman – principal of the Pasadena Symphony and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra – and pianist Rina Dokshitsky.
