Spring – It Has Sprung!

Saturday was a perfect spring day – a perfect day, in fact, for a fair. And thanks to the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce, that was what we got. The chamber hosted a fabulous Hometown Country Fair last Saturday that saw thousands come across the lawn of CV Park, ready to enjoy live entertainment, good food (that ran out too early), silent auction, vendors, non-profit organizations, carnival rides, a dog parade and even a dunk tank!

Now, in the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that I sit on the chamber board so I might be a bit biased. However, I have been involved with the Hometown Country Fair since its inception over eight years ago and I have to say that this was the best one yet. And it was terrific to see so many familiar faces and meet new neighbors. I was at the volunteer booth for most of the day – my wonderful staff oversaw the CV Weekly booth and I thank them for holding down the CVW fort.

Our office sits next door to Campbell’s Automotive on Honolulu Avenue and while walking over to settle a bill (Bill did some heavy duty work for me), I was again reminded that indeed spring has arrived. As I was walking over, I saw not one but two cars traveling across Honolulu with dogs hanging out the open window obviously loving the spring sunshine. It brought a smile to my face.

In celebration of spring, even though this is the time of the year to do some deep cleaning at home, I propose that this Saturday you make your way over to the Prom Plus Spring Boutique taking place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the St. Luke’s of the Mountains campus at 2563 Foothill Blvd. at Rosemont Avenue. There will be more than 20 vendors showcasing a variety of handcrafted items that are hard to find elsewhere.

And the boutique is just the beginning as Prom Plus (of which I am president) ramps up for another amazing night.

On May 5, Prom Plus is hosting one of my most favorite events: the Taste of Montrose.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., ticketholders will have the chance to taste samples from over 20 restaurants along Honolulu Avenue. All types of food will be available – baked goods, barbecue samples, vegetarian fare – all for just a $20 donation to Prom Plus. Such a deal, right? Tickets are on sale now at the CV Weekly office and at outlets around town. Keep your eyes on upcoming issues of the CV Weekly where you’ll find ads promoting the event and the participating restaurants.

Over Mother’s Day weekend, you’ll find members of Prom Plus and Prom Plus Club pitching a tent on the campus of Clark Magnet High School for the 24-hour Foothills Relay for Life that benefits the American Cancer Society.

This is a 24-hour fundraiser that really brings the community together to celebrate, remember, hope and fight back with those who are fighting cancer and those whose fight is over – win or lose. And consider coming out to Clark Magnet sometime between 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15 to show your support by walking a of couple laps.

The big event – Prom Plus – takes place on Saturday/Sunday May 18/19. The Crescenta-Cañada Y is the place to be after prom for CVHS prom goers. Admittance to Prom Plus is included with the purchase of a prom ticket. For those not wanting to attend prom, they can come to the Y after midnight and plunk down $20 to play in the casino, ride the zip line or ride a mechanical bull. These are just some of the oh-so-many things to do at Prom Plus.

But this Saturday, hang up your mop, pick up your purse and head over to St. Luke’s for the boutique.
