Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day

This Saturday at 8 a.m., please attend a very special ceremony at the Vietnam War Memorial in Montrose. This will be the first of what we hope will become an annual tradition. The Montrose memorial has the distinction of being the first built in the nation. Not only that, it was built while the conflict in Vietnam was going on. That is how strongly this community felt about the memorial. To be able to get support to build it was quite an accomplishment and we are very proud to have it here in our city.

Your support and attendance at this event would mean a lot to the local Vietnam veterans. There are quite a few who live in the area that served in Vietnam. This is our chance as a community to welcome them back and to remember those who gave their lives in service to this country. The ceremony will be led by members of VFW Post 1614 and American Legion 288.

Please pass this information along to Vietnam veterans or any veterans you know who served this country. For those who can, please come in uniform.

We hope to see you all in support of our veterans at the Vietnam War Memorial in Montrose at the northwest corner of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue at 8 a.m. Coffee and baked goods provided by Starbucks.

Our 17th annual Golf Classic and Scholarship fundraiser is on May 23. We invite you all to attend. It is a fun day of golfing at Verdugo Hills Golf Course with food catered by restaurants in Montrose. What a great way to not only have fun but to help the chamber give away scholarships to graduating seniors from Crescenta Valley and Clark Magnet high schools. We will present our scholarships to the students at the end of the tournament and hear from our past scholarship recipients on our big screen TV at the event. It is always a fun day at a great course. By golfing at our event, you also support the Save the Golf Course campaign that V.O.I.C.E. has been working tirelessly on. Their goal is to keep this course in the community and save it from development. Councilmember Richard Alarcon of the 7th District has made a motion to protect an important part of the cultural legacy of the northeast San Fernando Valley by including the Tuna Canyon Detention Station site on the city’s list of historical and cultural monuments. The Tuna Canyon Detention Station site, which was located where the Verdugo Hills Golf Course now stands, has been facing the threat of a proposed residential subdivision, which would degrade the site’s historic value, remove natural open space and eliminate an opportunity to commemorate a significant historic resource. Councilmember Alarcon’s motion would preserve and protect the important historic site from the threat of development.

“There is a rich and important history in the northeast San Fernando Valley that must be protected so kids today and generations in the future can learn from our past,” said Councilmember Alarcon. “I strongly believe that a housing development would be inconsistent with our goal to preserve the legacy of the Tuna Canyon Detention Station site and I am proud to work with partners in the Sunland-Tujunga community to protect the area.”

So please come out and support the Verdugo Hills Golf Course, scholarships for graduating high school seniors and the Montrose Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce.

Supervisor Antonovich’s Annual Arbor Day ceremony on Saturday, April 20 at 10 a.m. at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave., La Crescenta. Special guest speaker is Sheriff Lee Baca.

Centennial April business mixer on Thursday, May 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Stay tuned for the location!

Art Walk on Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the 2300 & 2400 blocks of Honolulu Avenue.
