Movie Night at Center
The community is invited to attend the movie, “What is New Thought?” on Saturday, June 8 at 7 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living in La Crescenta.

Although its influence has been widespread throughout our culture, most people have little knowledge about this far-reaching spiritual movement. Get a closer look at how New Thought has had an impact in the world and find out more about what our Center’s philosophy is based on.

Getting Ready for Summer at CVCHURCH
It’s time to celebrate the lazy, hazy and hot days of summer with some excellent music! Crescenta Valley Church presents “Summer Nights,” a concert on Sunday evening, June 9 at 5:30 p.m. Come and bring your whole family to enjoy summer songs by Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Keith Urban, Rihanna and more. Special guests include Kesha Shantrell and Aaron Encinas who will perform their YouTube hit “Stay” with Whitney Wood! The CVCHURCH band includes people from the American Idol finals choir and Dionne Warwick’s band, among others.

A food truck, free childcare (4 and under), and a whole lot of fun for everyone! A portion of the food sales will go to support the Walter Hoving Home, a Pasadena rehab center for women who struggle with addictions.

The event will also feature Barnabas Clothing, a cool company with some great clothes for the summer.

Spiritual Self-Worth Explored
International speaker Rob Gilbert will give a talk on a core element of mental health in all stages of life – self-worth – on Sunday, June 9 at 2 p.m. at Church of Christ, Scientist, in Montrose. His address will explore how an understanding of God’s nature, and our own, “encourages and empowers us to assert our God-given dominion and to embrace the natural worth of being a child of God.” His topic, “Spiritual self worth heals and transforms human character,” is suitable for youth and adults. There will be childcare for very young children. There is no admission fee.

The sponsoring organization, the Church of Christ, Scientist in Montrose, recognizes the community’s need for events that support social and spiritual progress in the wake of two teen suicides in two years, while also considering the needs of friends, parents, grandparents and those who live alone and those who may feel alone even in a crowd. This event offers practical support for all ages to find meaningful life purpose, and to help others identify a secure basis for worthiness.

Gilbert, a practitioner and teacher of Christian Science, served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army, fulfilling assignments in military prisons and hospitals including a tour of duty in Vietnam. He has worked closely with clergy and soldiers of many faiths, and with people who do not identify with a religious practice.

“It requires something more than human will to bring about needed change and silence a deep discontent with our lives,” Gilbert said of what his experiences indicate.

Harrison to speak at LaCresPres
La Crescenta Presbyterian presents a special guest speaker for its Distinguished Lecture series. David Harrison will offer a seminar titled, “Raising Financially Responsible Children in a Financially Irresponsible World” on Wednesday, June 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the chapel.

In this one time seminar, Harrison will address some of the major issues facing parents today in regards to materialism and wealth.

Harrison has been practicing estate law for 18 years in Orange County and has served as assistant vice president for Endowment Development for California State University at Long Beach and also as senior executive director for Gift Planning for World Vision. He currently serves as the director of Planned Giving at Hume Lake Ministries.
