Little Landers looks at Rockhaven Sanitarium

The Little Landers Historical Society presents “The History of Rockhaven Sanitarium.” In 1923 Rockhaven provided a safe and restful place for women recovering from mental illness. The property was purchased by the city of Glendale in 2008. The speaker for this presentation is Robert McFall, assistant manager for the city of Glendale. McFall will take the audience on a photo tour of Rockhaven, reflect on the facility’s colorful history and provide information on what the city has planned for its future. The presentation begins at 1 p.m. on Jan. 9 at Bolton Hall Museum, 10110 Commerce Ave., Tujunga. Admission is free.

foothill boulevard to undergo asphalt work

Work on the repaving of Foothill Boulevard from Pennsylvania Avenue to Briggs Avenue started on Jan. 4 with the installation of temporary No Parking signs along Foothill. Prep work was due to finish yesterday, Jan. 6. Today, Jan. 7, paving and grinding work will begin and may continue until Jan. 13. Motorists are advised that additional travel time may be needed due to increased traffic.

“Jewels of the Foothills”

The Sunland/Tujunga Art Association will be exhibiting fine arts and ceramics in various locations around the area in the new year. Association membership is necessary to show artwork. Deadline for applications and entry fees are due one week prior to the state date of the exhibit you wish to participate. Exhibits will be March 5 through March 27 at the La Cañada Library, 4545 Oakwood Ave.; and from April 9 through May 14 at Mission Valley Bank, 9116 Sunland Blvd., Sun Valley. FRANCES AVENUE PROJECT POSTPONED BY COUNTY

A project calling for a lot split and removal of two trees to create two residential parcels on a .38 acre lot at 2748 Frances Ave. will be heard by a planning officer Feb. 2. The project was postponed twice before, but now has been scheduled for Feb. 2.

A number of local residents have protested the tree removal and have raised congestion and parking issues.

ART ASSOCIATION HOLDING MEETING ON FRIDAY

The Verdugo Hills Art Association meeting on Friday, Jan. 8 will feature award winning, figurative watercolorist Ted Nuttal. Nuttal’s work has appeared on the cover of American Artist’s Watercolor magazine in both 2003 and 2008. Nuttal is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, Western Federation of Watercolorists and Transparent Watercolor Society of America. The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. at the La Crescenta Presbyterian Church, 2902 Montrose Ave., La Crescenta (Community Room on first floor). This meeting is open to the public for a $5 donation.
