Earlier this month, Crescenta Valley High School softball centerfielder Hannah Cookson was named to the All-Pacific League first team. The incoming senior hit .435 with 34 runs batted in to go along with her seven home runs.

Her offensive production was not as great as in 2012 when she hit 16 home runs, but some of that had to do with the fact she was walked the most on her team. Opposing teams gave her 12 free passes. It is the third year in a row Cookson was named to the first team.

Falcon starting pitcher Olivia Thayer was also named to the first team. Thayer posted a 1.75 earned-run average and struck out 81 batters. The Lady Falcons went 14-11 on the season, including a 3-1 playoff loss to La Salle in May.

CV basketball player Cole Currie is fresh off of graduating from high school, and now he’s headed to Tulane University. Currie picked the Louisiana based school after checking out the facilities on June 9. On June 18 he posted on Twitter, “Officially committed to play at Tulane University! Blessed to have this opportunity and compete at a high level.”

Currie was the main story for the Falcons in 2013. Playing both point and shooting guard, he averaged just under 20 points along with five rebounds in the Pacific League, leading CV to a second straight berth in the CIF Division 1A semifinals. Tulane was 20-16 last season under Coach Ed Conroy in Conference USA.

In baseball, Ted Boeke parlayed his success this past season to a spot with Loyola Marymount University. Boeke will join an LMU squad next year that went 24-27 in 2013, 12-12 in the West Coast Conference.

As a pitcher this spring, Boeke was 4-1 with a 0.98 ERA. At the plate, he hit five home runs, none bigger than his blast to left field at Arcadia High School on May 10. His three-run home run in the top of the seventh was the difference in the game as CV completed the comeback against the Apaches and captured a share of its second straight Pacific League title.

Boeke was given All-CIF honors as well as being named Pacific League MVP.

On the court this summer, the Falcons boys’ varsity team is 13-4 heading in to today’s game against La Cañada at Burbank High School. The Falcons previously beat the Spartans in their first summer game in late May.

CV recently won its first four games of the annual War on the Floor tournament at Pierce College, but was easily dispatched 67-38 by El Camino on Sunday. After today’s game, the varsity is scheduled for six games this weekend at UC San Diego before returning to the Burbank summer league on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m.

The CV freshman boys basketball team was 4-1 entering a couple of games on Wednesday, their only loss coming to Glendale on Monday at Burroughs. The next game for the freshman will be Monday at 5 p.m. at Burroughs and then Wednesday.

The junior varsity squad is 5-5. The team played two games on Tuesday at Burbank High School, having squeaked out a low-scoring 33-29 victory over Grant High School, but lost to Burroughs 46-44. CV plays today at Burbank HS at 5:15 p.m.
