Memories of the 4th

Well, another 4th of July has passed complete with a fantastic fireworks show at La Crescenta Elementary School courtesy of the Crescenta Valley Fireworks Assn. According to organizers, this year was especially successful due to the perfect weather that we enjoyed in addition to the expertise of Fireworks America, the company that handles all things fireworks. They do everything from selecting and manufacturing each explosive to deciding what will be featured in the program. The pyrotechnician was CV resident Robert “Hutch” Hutchins and he is the best there is.

I was at the elementary school at the CV Weekly booth from about 4:15 p.m. on July 4th until the end of the festivities and had a chance to say hi to many friends of the Crescenta Valley Weekly. Even state senate candidate Anthony Portantino and Congressman Adam Schiff took time from their busy schedules to stop by, as did Justin Hager from Assemblyman Mike Gatto’s office.

The music of Stinky Felix kept the afternoon lively and the food trucks were incredible! Kudos to Steve Pierce who was in charge of securing the food trucks. He made sure there was plenty to keep wait times to a minimum. And the goodies from Baked on Oceanview – I couldn’t stay away from their incredible brownies.

The carnival seemed to be pretty busy, too. And this year may have had the largest attendance in the recent history of the fireworks show.

I want to extend a special thank you to those who took the time to show their financial support for the fireworks. Donation envelopes were inserted into three issues of the CV Weekly and I understand that our readers really dug into their pockets to show their support. The money donated this year helps to ensure another event next year. As you probably know, the CV Fireworks Assn. is an all-volunteer organization. It’s very rewarding to the association members when the public appreciates their work. So thank you for making sure the skies above Crescenta Valley will be lighted again next year.

If you thought it was hot here, try heading to Indio like Steve and I did on July 5. My mother-in-law now lives in the desert community and we wanted to visit her, so we headed east on Friday. The top was down on the convertible and we were having a fine time until we went through the Banning Pass. All of a sudden the temperature jumped from 92 degrees to 104 and it was time to put the top up.

Things stayed heated on Saturday night when my best friend Amy, her sister Lori and I and attended the KC and the Sunshine Band and Village People concert at nearby Fantasy Springs. It was loads of fun and I had a chance to wear a sparkly red shirt.
