The Center for Spiritual Living in La Crescenta kicked up its heels and didn’t hold back any “yee-haws” at its annual Cowboy Church on Sunday.

The inspiration for the annual event came from senior minister Rev. Beverly Craig who was raised on a working ranch in Nebraska. She loved the open range and the idea of the American cowboy and wanted to share that with her congregation.

For nine years, Rev. Bev (as she is known) has brought in cowboy music to the church, mixing spiritual teachings with country music. This year Karen Mitchell and the CC Wranglers were on stage singing about a long gone era when doing the right thing was just the thing you did.

The Prom Plus Club kids from Crescenta Valley High School volunteered to help prepare for the barbeque that followed the service. They also showed off their country talents during the service by joining the congregation in dancing in the aisle doing their own version of square dancing.

After the service, everyone sat down to enjoy an old fashion Midwest barbecue of steak, chicken and hotdogs with a California twist – tofu dogs and veggie burgers were also served.
