For the Love of a Celebration

I love a party, a reason to break out and have a good time. The Crescenta Valley Weekly has had much to celebrate of late: we had a fantastic response to this year’s The Finest readers’ poll and our inaugural Discover resource guide/magazine was very well received. Additionally, three of CV Weekly’s best team members had anniversaries that needed recognizing: Lisa Stanners, our real estate sales guru, has been with us for a year already; Lisa Mitchell, our front office manager who maintains my sanity, just recently celebrated her birthday; and designer Matt Barger, who has garnered wide acclaim for his creations for our advertisers, also celebrated a birthday. Add to that the recent choice of reader Dave Meyer’s Desoto Pharmacy and soda shoppe as Food Network’s selection for California’s best ice cream treat and the decision was easy – road trip to Dave’s place in Canoga Park to celebrate everything with a big, frosty ice cream soda!

After each of us sidled up to a bar stool, we had some decisions to make: root beer float or a ice cream sundae? Perhaps a malt or milkshake? The choices seemed endless at Jerry’s Soda Shoppe but, to our credit, once we received our treats no further discussion was necessary – which was good considering that the only sounds heard were those of straws sucking up the goodness in those chocolate dipped mugs.

Congratulations to Dave of Desoto Pharmacy/Jerry’s Soda Shoppe on being recognized for its great ice cream treat. And thank you for hosting the staff of CV Weekly – we had so much fun!

At the Crescenta Valley Weekly, we are eager to share with you the many rescues that the Montrose Search & Rescue team is involved in. However, because the sheer volume is overwhelming, we try and make sure to write only about those rescues that are particularly interesting. Such was the case on Tuesday morning.

Mary O’Keefe’s story on page 7 captures the heroism and bravery exhibited by those who turned out in the pre-dawn hours to rescue a driver who careened off Angeles Crest Highway. Despite the cool temperatures and utter darkness, more than 40 rescuers – sheriffs, firemen, and MSR team members – arrived at mile marker 42 to help someone they had never met before.

When you step back and look at the bravery shown by these individuals, it is really humbling. With little to no regard for their personal safety, they go over the sides of mountains, climb sheer ice walls, and rappel out of helicopters to offer assistance to those in need.

I’m privileged to share their stories and know that you share my gratitude for their dedication.
