Greetings from CVDAPC! » Suzy Jacobs

Suzy Jacobs WEB 2013
We were at a barbecue, segregated into two groups: six parents and six high school students. Parents discussed college, the professionalization of high school sports, and raising happy kids even though you’re pushing them to excel so they, like every father there, can attend an Ivy.

According to my source, the teens talked about their schools (public and private), the fun things they’re doing like team sports and acting, and a Julie Bowen star sighting during their stroll along Larchmont. It was so heartening to be with teens comfortable with their parents, other adults, and each other.

We wish parents, guardians, and children have a safe, happy and productive school year. And good luck to teachers, administrators and staff! And, since it’s August, let’s talk prom!

Prom Plus kicked off its 20th year at a party on Saturday. The highlight was watching a dance performance celebrating proms across generations – from the ’20s to present day. The kids were terrific, the music was fun and everyone enjoyed the show! Anyone who reads this paper knows about Prom Plus so I don’t need to convince you to support them, especially this year. If you missed your prom, or still think back to your “Stairway to Heaven,” why not volunteer?

Our free parent sessions begin on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 7:25 p.m. at the Y on Foothill near the 2 Freeway. Childcare is free to members; for others it’s low cost. Do you need someone to come to your group to talk about the 40 developmental assets, trends in drug use, prescription drug abuse, or any other topic? We have a free speaker’s bureau. Please give me a call at (818) 646-7867!

Finally, we ask you to support our free parent workshops. Come to the First Baptist Church of La Crescenta, 4441 La Crescenta Ave., on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. for their Concert Under the Stars featuring music by Café Fuego and food trucks. It promises to be a fun evening for the entire community.  It’s free to attend, but you have to buy your own food.

Bring your friends!
