Join Me For ‘Breakfast At Tiffany’s’

Picture the scene in your mind: You’re outdoors, under the stars, surrounded by friends and neighbors, the smell of popcorn in the air as “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” dances across the big screen. Yes, it’s time for the 4th Annual Montrose Film Festival and Friday night Aug. 23 will be all about Audrey Hepburn and life as it was in 1961.

This movie, about a young woman living in an apartment in New York City, is iconic. Many say this role is what propelled Audrey to fame, so much so that over 50 years later we are still talking about it.

Did you know the Academy Award winning song “Moon River” was first sung by Audrey Hepburn in this movie? I didn’t know that back in Baltimore in the ’60s when our class performed it for parents’ night and Kevin Gouldmann sang solo. Kevin is a master piano builder living in Denmark now. But I digress.

“Breakfast at Tiffany’s” was directed by Blake Edwards and based on a novel by Truman Capote. It has a cast of well-known actors including Mickey Rooney who was the grand marshal in our Montrose Christmas parade. Blake Edwards was the husband of beloved Julie Andrews who lives close by. Wouldn’t it be great to see her!

The Film Fest begins at 6:30 p.m. and takes place at the site of the original Montrose theater, next to Andersen’s Pets. Come see students from CV High’s Prom Plus Club dressed in attire from ’60s movie era. The Maestros will be performing live music, and classic cars will be cruising Honolulu Avenue. All of our restaurants will be open for dining and the movie will be shown once it gets dark. If you choose to have dinner while viewing the movie, the Prom Plus Club carhops will take your order and deliver your food.

Oh, and did I mention this event, sponsored by the merchants of the Montrose Shopping Park, is free. We will have chairs set up for you and complimentary fresh popped popcorn. All you need is a blanket to wrap up in if it’s a cool night.
