Calendar’s Full Despite Summer’s End
The Crescenta Valley Weekly has been buzzing with activity these past weeks. Tallying the ballots cast by our readers for their favorite services, people, places, etc. – The Finest – has been keeping us pretty busy. We’ve had over 13,000 votes submitted and now that the counting is done, CV Weekly reps are in the process of delivering the exciting news to the winners. Congratulations to those selected and thanks to our readers who took the time to cast their ballots.
In September, we’ll be inserting into every newspaper a catalog that showcases the winners. It will give information on all those chosen as The Finest and will be a reliable resource when you’re in need of a repairman, curious about the finest place to enjoy a cocktail or interested in learning of the area’s favorite hiking trail.
We look forward to sharing the results with you.

It’s hard to believe that summer is drawing to a close. It used to be that Labor Day signaled the end of days at the beach, vacation plans and alfresco dining. School used to start the day after Labor Day, but now has been pushed back so far into August that things just seem off-kilter this year.
If the increased traffic didn’t sufficiently remind me that school is back in session, then tonight’s back to school activities at Crescenta Valley High would certainly do the trick.
Beginning around 6 p.m., parents will have the chance to visit each of their student’s classrooms, acquainting themselves with the teachers and learning what is expected from their student this year. Prior to that, though, Prom Plus will be hosting a barbecue to feed those who might not have had a chance to eat before coming to campus. A meal costs $6 and includes a sausage, burger or hot dog, chips and a drink. Not a bad deal. All profits benefit Prom Plus, the after-prom event for CV seniors and their prom dates. It is first come, first served, so if you’re planning on attending back to school at Crescenta Valley High and want to grab dinner, get there early. We’ll start dishing up around 5.
I’ll be wearing my Prom Plus apron and hope to see you there.

Another indication that summer is ending is the final performance of California Philharmonic’s Festival on the Green at Santa Anita Park. This Saturday, Cal Phil will be performing the music from Les Miz and Leonard Bernstein.
It is really something special to be seated on the infield at Santa Anita Race Track as the sun sets, enjoying a meal with friends. The orchestra takes the stage followed by maestro Victor Vener. Then the music begins.
Under a clear California night, listening to award-winning live music with friends reminds me how fortunate I am to live here. And while I might be sad that this season is ending, I can’t help but be a little excited when wondering what next year will bring.
For those who prefer a more refined experience, the same concert will be performed Sunday afternoon at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Tickets may still be on sale.
If we have to say good-bye to summer, I say let’s do it in style!

And if the calendar isn’t full enough, this Friday and Saturday is the annual Montrose Film Festival held in the lot next to Andersen’s Pets in the 2200 block of Honolulu Avenue. Friday night features “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” and Saturday is the Peter Sellers’ classic, “The Pink Panther.” Live entertainment begins at 6:30 p.m. with the movies starting about 8 p.m. With free admission, this makes for an enjoyable, inexpensive, family-friendly way to spend the weekend.
