Maryann Martin

Obit BW 0905

Sept. 22, 1941 – Aug. 30, 2013

Maryann Martin died suddenly in her sleep on Aug. 30 in her La Crescenta home at the age of 71.

She was born Sept. 22, 1941 in Massachusetts as the only child to James and Gertrude Motherway, both who preceded her in death.

Maryann graduated from Newton High in Newton, Mass., and later received her nursing degree. She married Gregory Martin, also of Newton, on Sept. 26, 1964, and they promptly moved to California.

Maryann was raising four sons in La Crescenta before taking a job as a registered nurse at Verdugo Hills Hospital where she worked in the neo-natal and pediatrics units. She received her Bachelor of Science degree at Chapman University and began working at Descanso Pediatrics in La Cañada Flintridge. She returned to Verdugo Hills Hospital to work in the Education Dept. before accepting a position to help run the Occupational Health office at Glendale Adventist Medical Center. Even upon retirement, she continued to work part-time for Glendale Adventist, traveling to police and fire departments, community colleges and other clients to distribute vaccinations.

Maryann had many passions in life, most notably being around family and friends. She loved cooking and reading, as well as trips with her husband Greg to their home in Lake Arrowhead. Most evenings Maryann enjoyed watching baseball or football, cheering for her Red Sox, Dodgers and Patriots. Her smile, laugh, love and support will be missed by all who knew her.

Maryann is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Gregory Lewis Martin; son Christopher James Martin; son Brian Lewis Martin and his wife Sandra and their daughters Emily and Marisa; son Gregory Lewis Martin Jr. and his wife Cindy and their soon-to-be born daughter; son Scott and his girlfriend Mary Corral-Galeano and her children Tony and Bella.

A Rosary and memorial Mass will be on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. at St. James the Less Catholic Church, 4625 Dunsmore Ave., La Crescenta. A reception will follow at 3 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2657 Honolulu Ave., Montrose.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maryann’s name to the American Heart Association.
