9/11 Observances Planned
Twelve years ago, the United States came under attack by terrorists that were part of the extremist group, al-Qaeda. They hijacked four airliners, flew two of the planes into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane was flown into the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C. and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Over 3,000 people were killed in these attacks including more than 400 police officers and firefighters.

To commemorate this loss and to honor those who died, several fire and city offices are holding a moment of silence: At 9 a.m. the Employee Human Relations Committee of the City of Glendale will hold a 9/11 Memorial Moment of Silence at Perkins Plaza at 141 N. Glendale Ave. Aaron VanVoorhis, the Glendale Police Dept. chaplain, will officiate.

Los Angeles County Fire Dept, will also commemorate 9/11 with a moment of silence at local stations. Those wishing to join are welcome; for exact times contact the station. Glendale fire stations, including local GFD Station 29, will also hold a moment of silence between 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m.

Workday, Campfire Planned
All are invited for the Sept. 7 campfire program, “I Don’t Like Spiders and Snakes” at Deukmejian Wilderness Park. The program will start at 6 p.m. with an hour of nature games in the picnic area. The campfire begins at 7 p.m. in the amphitheater with songs, skits, stories, smiles and S’mores. Come for all or a part of the evening. Please RSVP for this event by calling (818) 548-3795.

This is a free event.

The workday for the month will be on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Deukmejian with the theme “Deuk Dynasty … not Duck Dynasty.” Workers can meet at the park from 8 a.m. to noon for a time of tree watering, weeding and possibly painting. No need to register; just come out to the park for a morning of fun in the sun.

Deukmejian Wilderness Park is located at 3429 Markridge Road in La Crescenta.

GYA Art Exhibit Deadline Approaching
All submissions are due by Sept. 13 for the Glendale Youth Alliance Art Exhibit. The fundraiser will be held at Glendale Forest Lawn Museum/Hall of The Crucifixion-Resurrection on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m.

Submissions are currently being solicited from artists and sponsorships are being secured to help raise funds for local youth.

GWP Holding Classes
Glendale Water & Power (GWP), in partnership with the Metropolitan Water District, is offering Glendale residents free California Friendly landscape classes. Residents will learn to become a more water wise gardener and discover how to create a beautiful and easy to maintain garden without running up water bills.

Each class will teach residents about landscape design, how to install and maintain a smart irrigation system, and choosing the right California friendly plants. Classes are on Sept. 14, Sept. 28, and Oct. 19. Spring classes are also available.
