GCC athletics had a very solid week last week as the football team opened the season with a 35-7 win over El Camino Compton College Saturday, the men and women’s cross country teams each took third in the very competitive Fresno Invitational Saturday and the women’s soccer team won a pair of 2-1 games over El Camino Compton Colleges.
In football, a stingy Vaquero football team forced eight turnovers, five interceptions and three fumbles, and Glendale led 35-0 before Compton scored a late touchdown. Linebacker Marcus Tappan intercepted two passes, one he ran back for a score, and defensive back Dante Shipman also intercepted two passes. Quarterback Sean Murphy passed for 266 yards on 19 of 36 and three touchdowns and wide receiver Isaiah Bernard caught five passes for 85 yards and two scores.
In cross country, the women’s team scored 113 points to finish third behind meet winner Orange Coast with 36 and second place Mt. SAC with 105. Elizabeth Nelson was the top GCC runner over the 5K course in 19:13. Kelly Castillo was 15th in 19:43, Glyndyll Mancia was 23rd in 20:15, Teresa Vilafuerte was 28th in 20:25, Caitln Selve was 42nd in 20:48, Narges Motamedi was 55th in 21:12 and Alejandra Quintero was 66th in 21:35.
The men finished third over the four-mile race with 104 points behind meet winner American River College with 40 points and Mt. SAC in second with 68 points, Enrique Ramirez was the top GCC men’s finisher in 10th place in 21:06. Steban Aviles was 14th in 21:28, Daniel Marin was 25th in 21:41, Jorge Serrano was 26th in 21:42, Jorge Mendoza was 29th in 21:51, Sean Paknoosh was 40th in 22:11 and Edward Vasquez was 42nd in 22:13.
