This week the Gladiator Junior Gremlin, Gremlin, and Midget teams played at home in La Canada on Sunday against Arcadia (Junior Gremlin and Gremlin) and Hacienda Heights (Midget), while the Pee Wee team visited Temple City and the Junior Midgets visited Pasadena on Saturday.  The following parents and coaches contributed to this article: Keenan Cheung, Jeremy Cisneros, Chara and Gary Campanella, Dean Okland, and Ken Putnam.

JR. GREMLIN FLAG

 Teams do not keep score

The Jr. Gremlin team came flying out of the gate on Sunday against Arcadia.  The offense scored on their first 4 possessions.  The offensive line led the way behind Jackson Radabaugh,  Reid Matthews, Scott Smith, Jason Wszelaki,  Moises Guiragossian, and Nevada Smith.  Scott Smith and Jake Arellano alternated at quarterback and both led to the team to scores. Scott smith looked like a youthful Troy Aikman as he threw two downfield strikes to his receivers.  Corey Cheung scored twice as he darted thru the defense. Mo weaved his way methodically thru all 8 defenders to score and Jake Arellano scored as he outran the Arcadia defense down the sideline.  The defense seemed to be in the Arcadia backfield all day.  Shawn Irwin, Andrew Sibbrel, Kenny Carpenter and Nevada Miller pulled flags behind the line. Alec Heberger and Aaron Matthews anchored the defense from their safety position.

La Cañada 6, Temple City Rams 32

Gladiators Pee Wee division lost at Temple City by a score of 32-6 Saturday afternoon at Temple City High School. The Gladiators are now 3-2 on the season.

Things got off to a rough start when the Gladiators fumbled the opening kickoff and gave the Rams the ball on the gladiator 15 yard line. Two plays later the Rams scored a touchdown on a ten yard run up the middle to take a 7-0 lead. The Gladiators fumbled on the very next possession at the 50 but held the Rams out of the end zone on great 4^th down tackle by Jacob Buntich stopping the Rams’ drive at the Gladiator 5 yard line. The Gladiators could not move the ball and punted to the Rams who took over on the Gladiator 15. The Rams quickly scored on a 10 yard run off the left side. Clayton Byer swatted down a pass attempt on the point after try making the score 13-0.

On the ensuing Gladiator possession Brendan Pernecky ran off the left side for an 80 yard TD but the play was called back to the 50 yard line for holding. Pernecky finished with 60 yards rushing on 8 carries. The Gladiators recovered from the penalty and put together their only scoring drive featuring Thomas McConnell running and receiving gaining 55 of his 60 total yards on the drive including a 1 yard TD run to cap it off. The conversion attempt was blocked and the Gladiators trailed 13 to 6 at the half.

The Rams would go on to add three more touchdowns off of four Gladiator turnovers in the 2^nd half.

Defensively Kevin Parada led the gladiator with 6 tackles including a sack. Thomas McConnell and Brendan Pernecky had 5 tackles and Clayton Byer chipped in 4. Carter Link, Jackson Wendling, Mathew Buntich and Patrick Mohr all made tackles as well.

Jr. Midgets

La Cañada 45, Pasadena Panthers 63

On Saturday afternoon at John Muir high school in Pasadena, the La Canada Gladiator Junior Midgets lost a shoot out with the Pasadena Panthers 63-45. The Gladiators have are now 2-3 on the season.

The two teams traded touchdowns throughout the game with the final score as Panthers 60 and Gladiators 45. Quarterback Erik Zimmerman threw 39 passes. Many of which were the range of 25 yards to 50 yards in distance. He had 17 completions for 283 yards and 4 touchdowns. Some of his favorite receivers were Elijah Washington, Greg Dulcich Emmett Pernecky, Michael Torres, and Carson Okland. This game was the highest scoring game of the season.

The other offensive and defensive players were Chris Wood who made 3 point after kicks and did all of the kick-offs, Taylor McCubbin, Evan Estrada, Davy Stone, Clayton Esparza, Will Stewart, Jason Watson, Teddy Ibarra, Jack Stellwagen, Daniel Cho, Chris Simonian, Marcelino Martinez, Braeden Bentzen and Brandon Torres. The gladiators scoring machine was made possible by the great offensive line play of Chris Simonian, Mitch Espinoza, Marcellino Martinez, Jason Watson, and Daniel Cho.

Midgets

La Cañada 30, Hacienda Heights Cougars 6

The La Canada Gladiators remain undefeated after Sunday’s victory over the visiting Hacienda Heights Cougars, making them 5-0 for the season.

The Cougars kicked the game off into the waiting grasp of Alfonso Castillo, and the Gladiators’ offensive attack began, led by Patrick Casani, Rowan Seiter, Michael Sullivan, Justin Sabourin, Hermen Sebastian, Marty Martinez, and Justin Brown. The Cougars showed some tackling force in the first quarter, but the Gladiators responded in kind, with Jesse Blackwell, Rafe Stenwall, Gavin Chi and Charlie Johnson landing dominating take-downs. With three minutes left in the first quarter, Alfonso Castillo charged through Hacienda Heights territory, with multiple, ground-eating carries over more than thirty yards that resulted in the first touchdown of the game. Riley Center pushed through the opposition to drive home a successful two-point conversion on the following play putting the Gladiators up 8-0.

Second quarter opened dramatically with Drake Barron relentlessly taking down the Cougar offense with ground-rumbling tackles. Thomas Ary and David McAndrews landed resounding hits as the Gladiators tried to roust the Cougars out of their territory: despite a flying tackle into the end zone by La Canada, the Hacienda Heights offense drove in their only touchdown with six minutes on the clock. The Gladiators responded immediately, as Alfonso Castillo took the ensuing Cougar kick-off and ran the ball directly into the Hacienda Heights end-zone. The Gladiators punctuated the touchdown with another two-point conversion carry by Center to go up 16-6. The remainder of the quarter was a furious battle on the La Canada side of the field, with the Chi, Blackwell, and Stenwall pounding pads, while Bobby Gazmarian, Zach Kejmar, and Drake Barron jockeyed low and hard with the Cougars’ offense to cut off any hope of another Hacienda Heights touchdown by halftime.

The third quarter witnessed hard running by quarterback Austin Urbach, McAndrews and Castillo.  McAndrews’ 10 yard dash into the end-zone and Center’s successful conversion increased La Canada’s lead to 24-6.

At the beginning of the final period, La Canada scored again when Bobby Gazmarian snatched a long pass out of the air and raced over 70 yards for a score.

Herman Sebastian, and John Carter dominated the tackling efforts, while Patrick Casani, Castillo and Johnson fired bold passes deep into Cougars’ territory, with Center and Seiter pushing the offensive line hard against the desperate onslaught of Hacienda Heights’ race against the clock. Despite the gap in score and the searing determination of both teams to gain yardage, excellent sportsmanship was abundant, with both sides assisting tackled players to their feet and clapping respective shoulders after plays well made. The score remained 30-6 as the final tackle ended the game at the Cougars’ 18 yard-line.

Next week, the Midgets travel to Pico Rivera to take on the undefeated Dons at 6:00 p.m.
