All Souls Day at St. George’s

Lantern Festival

St. George Episcopal Church will celebrate All Souls Day with a special service of remembrance on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. This event allows people to bring pictures of loved ones, friends and family to be placed next to illuminated lanterns. People are encouraged to write names on the lanterns as well.

The service merges traditions from the east and west: the Celtic ritual of Samhain (changing of the season) with the Japanese Obon festival that traditionally culminates in what is called “Toro Nagashi” (floating lanterns). Since the remembrance of the departed is acknowledged in all cultures, the event has been designed to speak to all peoples from many traditions. The ecumenical service is open to all.

St. George’s is located at 808 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada.
