HALLOWEEN HAUNTED HOUSE  

The Dianetics Center in Montrose is having a haunted house tonight, Halloween night for children ages 3 to about 9 years old from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Ghouls, ghosts and goblins welcome (and other kids and people, too). Activities include a kids coloring contest, games, prizes, food (real food), treats, fresh baked goodies for kids and adults. Open to the community; no cost to attend.

PATRONS CLUB TO HOLD FUNDRAISER

On Nov. 1, the Patrons Club of Glendale College Foundation will hold its annual fundraiser at The Castaway, 1250 Harvard Road, Burbank, starting at 11:30 a.m. The event will benefit deserving students at Glendale Community College with scholarships and grants-in-aid. This year the Patrons Club will celebrate its 66th year of service to the college’s students.

The luncheon/fashion show will feature fashions by Holiday Hats and Gowns, Montrose, and Men’s Wearhouse of Glendale. There will be many prizes, including a $1,000 prize, and a silent and live auction.

Long-time Patrons Club member Gertrude Ness will be honored.

HEALTH FAIR ON SATURDAY

The City of Glendale is holding the 4th Annual Glendale Health Festival on Saturday, Nov. 2. This free festival is open to the community and will be hosted at Glendale’s Civic Auditorium (1401 N. Verdugo Blvd.) from 10 a.m. to 3 pm.

The health festival will include free medical screenings and health education for the entire family on conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity and proper nutrition, cancer awareness, diabetes, and more. There will be onsite multilingual medical staff to provide health-related information and advice. Insurance specialists will also be on hand with information regarding the new insurance exchange and the expanded Medi-Cal program. In addition, the festival will feature free food, entertainment, and activities for the entire family.

This special event will be hosted by the Armenian American Medical Society (AAMS) in collaboration with Glendale Adventist Medical Center, Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center, Glendale Healthy Kids, Office of State Senator Carol Liu, Office of Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, Los Angeles County Dept. of Public Health, Glendale Community Services and Parks Dept., Northwest Glendale Lions Club, and the Armenian American Nurses Association.

COLEMAN TO EMCEE ARC COMEDY SHOW

The Glendale-Crescenta Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross presents the 22nd Annual Fritz Coleman Comedy Show at the Glendale Centre Theatre on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.

Coleman, popular Channel 4 weatherman and gifted stand-up comedian, has recruited a team of his talented comedy colleagues for an evening of fun and laughter, all to benefit the Glendale-Crescenta Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Open seating tickets are $25 per person; reserved seating VIP tickets, which include dinner at nearby Phoenicia Restaurant before the show, are $70 per person or $120 for two people.

BOWLING … FOR A GOOD CAUSE

GAR Services will hold its 17^th annual bowl-a-thon at Pickwick Lanes in Burbank on Nov. 3. Funds raised will help GAR Services to continue to provide quality programs and services to its clients. This year, all participants and their guests will receive a commemorative event T-shirt. The 24 participating bowling teams will compete for first, second and third place trophies.  Bringing their bowling talent to each team will be a GAR services client, some of whom compete in the Special Olympics bowling tournament which is recognized as one of the top teams in California.

The day will include a buffet lunch, door prizes and bowling tournament. Teams of four bowlers are $125 each; client sponsorship is $35 each. The GAR bowl-a-thon is a sold out event every year and team spaces fill fast and will be assigned lanes on a first-come, first-served basis.

TIME EXPOSURE AT BOLTON HALL

Little Landers Historical Society announces the installation of a new temporary Bolton Hall exhibit. Until April 2014, Time Exposure will display an extensive collection of vintage cameras and projection equipment. Visit Bolton Hall to see how photo memories were recorded in the olden days. Most of today’s youngsters are used to tiny digital cameras and being able to see and print pictures instantly. We encourage children to visit Bolton Hall to see how pictures were taken before the digital age and to learn something about the incredible innovations that led to today’s modern photography.

Bolton Hall is open to the public on Tuesday and Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and entrance is free. Special group tours may also be arranged.

FREE SELF-HELP ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, ANGER MEETING

The YMCA of the Foothills is hosting keynote speaker Father Gregory Boyle at the annual community prayer breakfast on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 6:30 a.m. at the Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA. GLENDALE YOUTH ALLIANCE ART EXHIBIT FUNDRAISER

The Glendale Youth Alliance is holding its second art exhibit fundraiser at Glendale Forest Lawn Museum/Hall of The Crucifixion-Resurrection on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. This evening of art and culture raises funds to invest in the area’s future workforce. Over 300 guests and 100 pieces of art are expected to fill the prestigious hall. Admission to the art exhibit is free and a percentage of all art work sold will benefit the youth served through the GYA programs. There will be wine and hors d’oeuvres available for a donation of $25.

Razmik Grigorian is the curator of this year’s art exhibit. Grigorian is a local businessman, architect, award winning filmmaker, an avid art collector and longest serving commissioner on the City of Glendale’s Arts and Culture Commission.


 

JUNIORS HOSTING DANCE

The juniors section of the La Crescenta Woman’s Club is presenting its 2nd Annual Salute Our Service People dance on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the La Crescenta Woman’s Club. They will be celebrating all military personnel who have served our country. Active military personnel or veterans are free with proof of service.

There will be swing dance lessons for those who need a refresher course and appetizers along with a no-host beer and wine bar. The ’40s dress theme is the plan for the evening and encouraged.

SIERRA CLUB HOSTS ‘MONARCH’ PRESENTATION

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club presents Joe and Priscilla Cruz’s, “Plight of the Monarch,” on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles County Public Library.

Joe and Priscilla will focus their program on the rapid decline in numbers of the Monarch butterfly in California. The various points about this insect are the scientific mysteries, the migration of the Monarch as a prime pollinator, the image and superstition people attach to the Monarch and the education and action needed to help save them. A video will be shown of the life cycle from egg to butterfly, and a video of the preserve in Mexico.

MONA GROUNDBREAKING

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Glendale Museum of Neon Art (MONA) will be on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 10 am. Join MONA and the City of Glendale in preparing 216 S. Brand Blvd. to glow with neon lights.

Once completed, MONA will be the brightest spot in the heart of downtown Glendale. It will serve as the anchor for Glendale’s growing Cultural Arts District, spanning from Colorado Boulevard to the Alex Theater on North Brand. The Museum of Neon Art was founded in 1981, and will have its first permanent home in 2014.


 

ART AND MUSIC BOOK SALE

An art and music book sale will be held at the Glendale Central Library Auditorium on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Members of Associates of Brand Library & Art Center or Friends of the Glendale Public Library are invited to attend a preview sale from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. All patrons of the sale can use the Market Place parking structure across from library on Harvard Street with validation at the library reception desk.

The sale will include a large selection of arts-related books, art auction catalogs, CDs, vinyl records, sheet music, music scores, and artwork. A limited set of serigraphs by prominent printmaker Robert Brown will also be offered for sale.

Proceeds from this booksale will help fund the expansion of cultural programs.

FOOTHILL MOMS CLUB TO HOST PRESCHOOL EXPO

The Foothill MOMS Club will host its sixth annual Preschool Expo from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov.16 at La Crescenta Presbyterian Church.

Attendees will have an opportunity to meet representatives from preschools in Glendale, La Crescenta, La Cañada, Lake View Terrace, Pasadena, Sunland and Tujunga and learn about school philosophy, programs and admissions. The 2013 holiday season brings many changes to the Towne Singers. The Towne Singers is now an organization supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County board of supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. Lance Merrill is the organization’s new conductor for the 2013 holiday season. Maria Wietrzynska is the new accompanist for the Towne Singers. NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also support programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)3 organization, so donations are tax deductible. Arrangements can be made to pick-up large donations. Call the library at (818) 352-4481 to schedule a pick-up.

VAN BLOEM SINGERS HOLDING AUDITIONS    

Auditions are being held for the Van Bloem Singers, a volunteer singing group that has completed its 21stseason having performed more than 800 shows. The group is looking for those interested in performing Broadway and contemporary music.

Being able to “sight read” is not necessary, but some performing experience is preferred. Men and women who are able to perform between noon and 3 p.m. on weekdays and on an occasional evening, Saturday or Sunday can apply. Rehearsals are Monday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Chapel of the Burbank Salvation  Army.

The Van Bloem Singers perform more than 30 shows each year for service clubs, volunteer organizations, retiree and church groups, senior residences and  health care facilities, however, singers need not make every performance.

FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly infant lactation and development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
